Although / though / despite

คำเหล่านี้แสดงความขัดแย้ง: สิ่งที่สองเกิดขึ้นผิดจากที่คาดไว้จากสิ่งแรก (ฝนตก แต่เราก็ยังออกไปข้างนอก) หัวใจสำคัญคืออะไรตามหลังแต่ละคำ

อนุประโยค although วางไว้ต้นประโยค (ใส่จุลภาคตามหลัง) หรือกลางประโยคก็ได้ Though ความหมายเหมือนกันแต่เป็นภาษาพูดมากกว่า Even though หนักแน่นกว่า — “ถึงแม้ว่าจะเป็นอย่างนั้นจริง ๆ ก็ตาม” ส่วน even คำเดียวเชื่อมสองอนุประโยคไม่ได้

• Although the flat is small, it's very comfortable.

  ถึงห้องจะเล็ก แต่ก็อยู่สบายมาก

• We kept walking even though our feet hurt.

  เราเดินต่อไปทั้งที่เจ็บเท้า

• Even though I've lived here for ten years, I still get lost in the Old Quarter.

  ถึงแม้ฉันจะอยู่ที่นี่มาสิบปีแล้ว ฉันก็ยังหลงทางในย่านเมืองเก่าอยู่ดี

• I like my job. The pay isn't great, though.

💡ภาษาไทยพูดคู่กันว่า “แม้ว่า … แต่ …” แต่ภาษาอังกฤษใช้คำเชื่อมแค่คำเดียว: although หรือ but อย่างใดอย่างหนึ่ง ห้ามใช้ทั้งสองคำ Although it was late, we kept talking. / It was late, but we kept talking.

Despite และ in spite of ความหมายเหมือนกัน ตามด้วยคำนาม คำสรรพนาม (this, that, everything…) หรือ -ing จำไว้ว่า despite ไม่มี of แต่ in spite ต้องมี of เสมอ ถ้าอยากตามด้วยอนุประโยคเต็ม ให้เติม the fact that

• Despite the traffic, we got to the airport on time.

  ถึงรถจะติด เราก็ไปถึงสนามบินทันเวลา

• In spite of his age, my grandfather still plays badminton every morning.

  ถึงจะอายุมากแล้ว คุณปู่ก็ยังตีแบดทุกเช้า

• She failed the test despite studying all week.

  เธอสอบตกทั้งที่อ่านหนังสือมาทั้งสัปดาห์ (-ing มีประธานเดียวกับประโยคหลัก)

• Minh was exhausted, but despite this he finished the report.

  มินห์เหนื่อยมาก แต่ถึงอย่างนั้นเขาก็ทำรายงานเสร็จ

• Despite the fact that it was a public holiday, the shop was open.

  ถึงแม้วันนั้นจะเป็นวันหยุดนักขัตฤกษ์ ร้านก็ยังเปิด

ความหมายเดียวกันใช้ although (+ อนุประโยค) หรือ despite (+ คำนาม / -ing) ก็ได้ คู่นี้ตรงกับคู่ที่ใช้บอกเหตุผล: because / because of

• Although I was very tired, I couldn't sleep.

  ถึงฉันจะเหนื่อยมาก แต่ก็นอนไม่หลับ

• Despite being very tired, I couldn't sleep.

  ถึงจะเหนื่อยมาก ฉันก็นอนไม่หลับ (despite + -ing)

• We went out in spite of the rain.

  เราออกไปข้างนอกทั้งที่ฝนตก

• We stayed in because of the rain.

  เราอยู่บ้านเพราะฝนตก

💡เช็กง่าย ๆ: ถ้าหลังช่องว่างมีกริยาแท้ (was, is, had, can…) → although / even though ถ้ามีแค่คำนามหรือ -ing → despite / in spite of

But เชื่อมสองความคิดในประโยคเดียว However ขึ้นประโยคใหม่ (มักมีจุลภาคตามหลัง) หรือตามหลังเครื่องหมาย ; และเป็นทางการกว่า but ในงานเขียนที่ประณีต อย่าเชื่อมสองอนุประโยคด้วยแค่จุลภาค + however

• The hotel was lovely. However, the food was disappointing.

  โรงแรมสวยมาก อย่างไรก็ตาม อาหารน่าผิดหวัง

• The hotel was lovely, but the food was disappointing.

  โรงแรมสวยมาก แต่อาหารน่าผิดหวัง

• The hotel was lovely; however, the food was disappointing.

  โรงแรมสวยมาก ทว่าอาหารกลับน่าผิดหวัง (ทางการ)

💡Even though พูดถึงข้อเท็จจริง (ถึงแม้ว่าจะเป็นอย่างนั้นจริง) ส่วน even if พูดถึงความเป็นไปได้ (ไม่ว่าจะเกิดหรือไม่ก็ตาม): Even though it's raining, I'll go (ฝนกำลังตกจริง ๆ) Even if it rains, I'll go (ฝนอาจตกหรือไม่ตกก็ได้)

  ใช้คำเชื่อมแค่คำเดียว

• ✗Despite of the noise, the baby slept well.

  Despite ไม่มี of

  In spite ต้องมี of

  Despite ตามด้วยอนุประโยคไม่ได้
