“So … that” / “such … that”

So … that และ such … that หมายถึง “…มากจนกระทั่ง…”: ส่วนแรกบอกระดับที่สูงมาก และอนุประโยค that บอกผลลัพธ์ ความต่างคือ so ใช้กับคำคุณศัพท์ / คำกริยาวิเศษณ์ ส่วน such ใช้กับคำนาม

ในภาษาพูดมักละ that: I was so tired I fell asleep on the bus

ดูว่าอะไรตามหลังช่องว่างทันที ถ้ามีแค่คำคุณศัพท์ / คำกริยาวิเศษณ์ → so ถ้ามีคำนาม (แม้จะมีคำคุณศัพท์นำหน้า) → such ถ้าเป็นคำนามนับได้เอกพจน์ ต้องคง a / an ไว้หลัง such

• The test was so easy that everyone passed.

  ข้อสอบง่ายมากจนทุกคนสอบผ่าน

• It was such an easy test that everyone passed.

  มันเป็นข้อสอบที่ง่ายมากจนทุกคนสอบผ่าน (มีคำนาม test ตามมา → such an)

• The kids were so noisy that the neighbours complained.

  เด็ก ๆ เสียงดังมากจนเพื่อนบ้านมาร้องเรียน

• They were such noisy kids that the neighbours complained.

  พวกเขาเป็นเด็กที่เสียงดังมากจนเพื่อนบ้านมาร้องเรียน (พหูพจน์ → ไม่มี a)

• She speaks such good English that people think she grew up in London.

  เธอพูดภาษาอังกฤษเก่งมากจนคนคิดว่าเธอโตที่ลอนดอน (English นับไม่ได้ → ไม่มี a)

หลังกริยาทั่วไปให้ใช้ so + คำกริยาวิเศษณ์: He drove so carefully that… (ไม่ใช่: so careful)

💡จะเลือก so หรือ such ขึ้นอยู่กับสิ่งที่ตามมาอย่างเดียว ถามตัวเองว่า “หลังช่องว่างมีคำนามไหม” มี → such (a) ไม่มี → so รูป so + คำคุณศัพท์ + a + คำนาม (so good a film) ก็มีอยู่ แต่เป็นทางการมากและพบน้อย

หน้าคำบอกปริมาณให้ใช้ so ไม่ใช่ such: so many / so few + คำนามพหูพจน์ และ so much / so little + คำนามนับไม่ได้ ส่วน such a lot of ใช้ได้กับคำนามทั้งสองแบบ

• There were so many motorbikes that the traffic didn't move for an hour.

  มอเตอร์ไซค์เยอะมากจนรถไม่ขยับไปเป็นชั่วโมง

• I've got so much homework that I can't go out tonight.

  ฉันมีการบ้านเยอะมากจนคืนนี้ออกไปไหนไม่ได้

• So few students signed up that the class was cancelled.

  มีนักเรียนสมัครน้อยมากจนชั้นเรียนถูกยกเลิก

Very บอกแค่ระดับ ตามด้วยอนุประโยค that ไม่ได้ So … that บอกผลลัพธ์ Too … to หมายถึง “มากเกินกว่าจะทำได้หรือยอมรับได้” — ดูบทเรียน “‘Too … to’ / ‘enough to’” ถ้าไม่มี that, so / such แค่เพิ่มอารมณ์ ซึ่งแรงกว่า very

• The coffee was so strong that I couldn't sleep.

💡อย่าใช้ very … that หรือ too … that: I was so hungry that I ate two bowls (ไม่ใช่: very hungry that / too hungry that)
