“So … that” / “such … that”

Intermedio

Forma e uso

so + agg + that, such a + nome + that — una causa e il suo effetto

1.Forma

So … that e such … that significano “così … che”: la prima parte indica un grado molto alto e la frase con that ne dà il risultato. La differenza: so va con un aggettivo / avverbio, such va con un nome.

StrutturaEsempio
so + aggettivo / avverbio + thatThe soup was so spicy that I couldn't finish it.
such a / an + (aggettivo) + nome singolare + thatIt was such a long day that I fell asleep at eight.
such + (aggettivo) + nome plurale / non numerabile + thatThey're such kind people that everyone loves them.
so many / few + nome plurale + thatThere were so many people that we couldn't get in.
so much / little + nome non numerabile + thatI had so much work that I skipped lunch.

Nel parlato that viene spesso omesso: I was so tired I fell asleep on the bus.

2.So o such?

Guarda cosa viene subito dopo lo spazio vuoto. Solo un aggettivo / avverbio → so. Con un nome numerabile singolare, tieni a / an dopo such.

  • The test was so easy that everyone passed.

  • It was such an easy test that everyone passed.

(segue un nome, test → such an)

  • The kids were so noisy that the neighbours complained.

  • They were such noisy kids that the neighbours complained.

(plurale → niente a)

  • She speaks such good English that people think she grew up in London.

(English è non numerabile → niente a)

Dopo un verbo normale usa so + avverbio: He drove so carefully that… (non: so careful).

Sì → such (a); no → so. Esiste anche la struttura so + aggettivo + a + nome (so good a film), ma è molto formale e rara.

3.So much, so many, so few, so little

Davanti a una parola di quantità usa so, non such: so many / so few + nome plurale, so much / so little + nome non numerabile. Such a lot of funziona con tutti e due i tipi di nome.

  • There were so many motorbikes that the traffic didn't move for an hour.

  • There was such a lot of noise that I couldn't hear the teacher.

4.So, very o too?

Very indica solo il grado; non può essere seguito da una frase con that. So … that dà un risultato. Too … to significa “più di quanto sia possibile o accettabile”: vedi la lezione “Too … to / enough to”. Senza that, so / such servono solo ad aggiungere emozione, più forte di very.

SignificatoEsempio
veryun grado alto, niente di piùIt was very cold.
so … thattalmente tanto che (segue un risultato)It was so cold that the lake froze.
too … topiù del possibile / accettabileIt was too cold to swim.
so / such (senza that)enfasi, emozioneIt's so hot today! She's such a nice person.

Il caffè era troppo forte perché riuscissi a berlo.

  • Thanks for the flowers — you're so kind!

Non usare very … that né too … that: I was so hungry that I ate two bowls (non: very hungry that / too hungry that).
