Frasi relative con whose / where / when
IntermedioRelative clauses with whose / where / when
Forma e uso
whose + nome, the place where…, the day when…, the reason why… — altri modi per descrivere un nome
1.Panoramica
| Parola | Sostituisce | Esempio |
|---|---|---|
| whose | his / her / its / their (possesso) | a student whose phone was stolen |
| where | in / at / to + quel luogo | the café where we met |
| when | on / in / at + quel momento | the year when I left school |
| why | un motivo (dopo the reason) | the reason why she left |
| whom | una persona come oggetto (formale) | the person to whom I spoke |
Whose + nome sostituisce il possessivo his / her / its / their.
I have a classmate whose mother runs a pho restaurant.
We met a couple whose kids go to the same school as ours.
It's a small company whose products are sold all over Asia.
Mr Hai, whose son I used to teach, still sends me mangoes every summer.
Whose e who's si pronunciano allo stesso modo /huːz/ ma significano cose diverse: who's = who is / who has. Se ci sta “who is”, scrivi who's; se il senso è “di cui / il cui”, scrivi whose.
3.Where: il luogo in cui
Where segue un nome di luogo (house, city, café, shop…) e significa in / at which (dove, in cui).
That's the house where I grew up. = That's the house I grew up in.
Quella è la casa dove sono cresciuto. (anche: the house which I grew up in)
Do you know a place where we can park for free?
Conosci un posto dove possiamo parcheggiare gratis?
Where o which? Se alla frase manca il soggetto o manca l'oggetto, usa which / that.
Hoi An is a town where you can walk everywhere.
(you can walk è completo → where)
Hoi An is a town which attracts millions of visitors.
Hoi An is a town I'd love to visit again.
(visit non ha oggetto → which/that o niente, non where)
Where può seguire anche nomi che indicano una situazione o una fase: a situation where…, a point where…, a stage where….
4.When e why
When segue un nome di tempo (day, year, time, moment, month…). Why segue the reason.
I'll never forget the moment when I first saw the sea.

Per il tempo usa when, non where: the day when we met (non: the day where…). I madrelingua dicono spesso “The reason is because…”, ma nello scritto formale “The reason is that…” è più sicuro.
5.Whom, preposizioni e some of whom
Subito dopo una preposizione usa solo whom / which, mai who o that.
| Formale | Quotidiano |
|---|---|
| the person to whom I spoke | the person (who) I spoke to |
| the colleague with whom she works | the colleague (who) she works with |
| the hotel at which we stayed | the hotel (that) we stayed at / the hotel where we stayed |
In una frase tra virgole puoi usare quantità + of + whom / which: some of whom, most of which, both of whom, none of which….
