Oraciones de relativo con whose / where / when
IntermedioRelative clauses with whose / where / when
Forma y uso
whose + sustantivo, the place where…, the day when…, the reason why… — más formas de describir un sustantivo
1.Panorama general
| Palabra | Sustituye a | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| whose | his / her / its / their (posesión) | a student whose phone was stolen |
| where | in / at / to + ese lugar | the café where we met |
| when | on / in / at + ese momento | the year when I left school |
| why | un motivo (después de the reason) | the reason why she left |
| whom | una persona como objeto (formal) | the person to whom I spoke |
Whose + sustantivo sustituye al posesivo his / her / its / their.
I have a classmate whose mother runs a pho restaurant.
(whose mother = his/her mother)
We met a couple whose kids go to the same school as ours.
It's a small company whose products are sold all over Asia.
Mr Hai, whose son I used to teach, still sends me mangoes every summer.
El señor Hai, a cuyo hijo di clases hace años, todavía me manda mangos cada verano.
Whose y who's suenan igual /huːz/ pero significan cosas distintas: who's = who is / who has. Si encaja “who is”, escribe who's; si el sentido es “de quien”, escribe whose.
3.Where: el lugar en el que
Where va después de un sustantivo de lugar (house, city, café, shop…) y significa in / at which (“donde, en el que”). Hay tres maneras de decir lo mismo:
That's the house where I grew up. = That's the house I grew up in.
Esa es la casa donde crecí. (también: the house which I grew up in)
Do you know a place where we can park for free?
¿Where o which?
Hoi An is a town where you can walk everywhere.
(you can walk está completo → where)
Hoi An is a town which attracts millions of visitors.
(attracts no tiene sujeto → which)
Hoi An is a town I'd love to visit again.
(visit no tiene objeto → which/that o nada, no where)
Where también puede ir después de sustantivos que indican una situación o etapa: a situation where…, a point where…, a stage where….
4.When y why
When va después de un sustantivo de tiempo (day, year, time, moment, month…). Why va después de the reason.
I'll never forget the moment when I first saw the sea.
Saturday is the only day when I can sleep in.

Para el tiempo usa when, no where: the day when we met (no: the day where…). Los nativos dicen a menudo “The reason is because…”, pero en la escritura formal es más seguro “The reason is that…”.
5.Whom, preposiciones y some of whom
Justo después de una preposición, usa solo whom / which, nunca who ni that.
| Formal | Cotidiano |
|---|---|
| the person to whom I spoke | the person (who) I spoke to |
| the colleague with whom she works | the colleague (who) she works with |
| the hotel at which we stayed | the hotel (that) we stayed at / the hotel where we stayed |
En una oración con comas puedes usar cantidad + of + whom / which: some of whom, most of which, both of whom, none of which….
I have three cousins, two of whom live in Australia.
We tried four cafés, most of which were full.
