Orações relativas com whose / where / when
IntermédioRelative clauses with whose / where / when
Forma e uso
whose + substantivo, the place where…, the day when…, the reason why…
| Palavra | Substitui | Exemplo |
|---|---|---|
| whose | his / her / its / their (posse) | a student whose phone was stolen |
| where | in / at / to + aquele lugar | the café where we met |
| when | on / in / at + aquele momento | the year when I left school |
| why | um motivo (depois de the reason) | the reason why she left |
| whom | uma pessoa como objeto (formal) | the person to whom I spoke |
Whose + substantivo substitui o possessivo his / her / its / their.
I have a classmate whose mother runs a pho restaurant.
(whose mother = a mãe dele/dela)
We met a couple whose kids go to the same school as ours.
It's a small company whose products are sold all over Asia.
Mr Hai, whose son I used to teach, still sends me mangoes every summer.
Whose e who's têm o mesmo som /huːz/, mas significam coisas diferentes: who's = who is / who has. Se “who is” encaixa, escreva who's; se o sentido é “de quem / cujo”, escreva whose.
3.Where — o lugar onde
Where vem depois de um substantivo de lugar (house, city, café, shop…) e significa in / at which (onde, no qual).
That's the house where I grew up. = That's the house I grew up in.
Essa é a casa onde eu cresci. (também: the house which I grew up in)
Do you know a place where we can park for free?
Você conhece algum lugar onde a gente possa estacionar de graça?
Where ou which?
Hoi An is a town where you can walk everywhere.
Hoi An é uma cidade onde dá para ir a pé a todo lugar. (you can walk está completo → where)
Hoi An is a town which attracts millions of visitors.
Hoi An is a town I'd love to visit again.
4.When e why
When vem depois de um substantivo de tempo (day, year, time, moment, month…).
I'll never forget the moment when I first saw the sea.
Saturday is the only day when I can sleep in.

The traffic was terrible. That's why we missed the start.
O trânsito estava horrível. Foi por isso que perdemos o começo.
Para tempo, use when, e não where: the day when we met (não: the day where…). Os nativos costumam dizer “The reason is because…”, mas na escrita formal “The reason is that…” é mais seguro.
5.Whom, preposições e some of whom
| Formal | Dia a dia |
|---|---|
| the person to whom I spoke | the person (who) I spoke to |
| the colleague with whom she works | the colleague (who) she works with |
| the hotel at which we stayed | the hotel (that) we stayed at / the hotel where we stayed |
Numa oração entre vírgulas, você pode usar quantidade + of + whom / which: some of whom, most of which, both of whom, none of which….
I have three cousins, two of whom live in Australia.
We tried four cafés, most of which were full.
Tentamos quatro cafés, e a maioria estava lotada.
