“So … that” / “such … that”

Intermédio

Forma e uso

so + adj + that, such a + substantivo + that — uma causa e seu resultado

1.Forma

So … that e such … that significam “tão … que”: a primeira parte mostra um grau muito alto e a oração com that dá o resultado. A diferença: so vai com um adjetivo / advérbio, such vai com um substantivo.

EstruturaExemplo
so + adjetivo / advérbio + thatThe soup was so spicy that I couldn't finish it.
such a / an + (adjetivo) + substantivo no singular + thatIt was such a long day that I fell asleep at eight.
such + (adjetivo) + substantivo no plural / incontável + thatThey're such kind people that everyone loves them.
so many / few + substantivo no plural + thatThere were so many people that we couldn't get in.
so much / little + substantivo incontável + thatI had so much work that I skipped lunch.

Na fala, o that muitas vezes é omitido: I was so tired I fell asleep on the bus.

2.So ou such?

  • The test was so easy that everyone passed.

  • It was such an easy test that everyone passed.

(vem um substantivo, test → such an)

  • The kids were so noisy that the neighbours complained.

  • They were such noisy kids that the neighbours complained.

  • She speaks such good English that people think she grew up in London.

(English é incontável → sem a)

Depois de um verbo comum, use so + advérbio: He drove so carefully that… (não: so careful).

Sim → such (a); não → so. A estrutura so + adjetivo + a + substantivo (so good a film) também existe, mas é muito formal e rara.

3.So much, so many, so few, so little

Antes de uma palavra de quantidade, use so, e não such: so many / so few + substantivo no plural, so much / so little + substantivo incontável. Such a lot of funciona com os dois tipos de substantivo.

  • There were so many motorbikes that the traffic didn't move for an hour.

  • I've got so much homework that I can't go out tonight.

  • There was such a lot of noise that I couldn't hear the teacher.

4.So, very ou too?

Very só mostra o grau; não pode ser seguido de uma oração com that. So … that dá um resultado. Too … to significa “mais do que é possível ou aceitável” — veja a lição “Too … to / enough to”. Sem o that, so / such simplesmente dão emoção à frase, mais forte que very.

SignificadoExemplo
veryum grau alto, nada maisIt was very cold.
so … thattanto que (vem um resultado)It was so cold that the lake froze.
too … tomais do que é possível / aceitávelIt was too cold to swim.
so / such (sem that)ênfase, emoçãoIt's so hot today! She's such a nice person.

  • The coffee was too strong for me to drink.

O café estava forte demais para eu tomar.

  • Thanks for the flowers — you're so kind!

Obrigado pelas flores — você é tão gentil!

Não use very … that nem too … that: I was so hungry that I ate two bowls (não: very hungry that / too hungry that).
