Lição 104 · Etapa 9: Ligando ideias
Although / though / despite
IntermédioForma e uso
although/even though + oração, despite/in spite of + substantivo ou -ing — um contraste
1.Significado e forma
|---|---|---|
| although / though / even though | uma oração (sujeito + verbo) | Although it was raining, we went out. |
| despite / in spite of | um substantivo, um pronome ou -ing | Despite the rain, we went out. |
| despite / in spite of the fact that | uma oração | Despite the fact that it was raining, we went out. |
| but | uma oração, dentro da mesma frase | It was raining, but we went out. |
| however | uma nova frase, depois de ponto final ou ponto e vírgula | It was raining. However, we went out. |
2.Although / though / even though + oração
Although the flat is small, it's very comfortable.
Embora o apartamento seja pequeno, é muito confortável.
We kept walking even though our feet hurt.
Continuamos andando mesmo com os pés doendo.
Even though I've lived here for ten years, I still get lost in the Old Quarter.
Mesmo morando aqui há dez anos, ainda me perco no Bairro Antigo.
I like my job. The pay isn't great, though.
Gosto do meu trabalho.
Although it was late, we kept talking. / It was late, but we kept talking.
3.Despite / in spite of + substantivo ou -ing
Despite e in spite of significam o mesmo (apesar de). Depois deles vem um substantivo, um pronome (this, that, everything…) ou -ing. Lembre-se: despite não tem of; in spite sempre precisa de of. Para usar uma oração completa depois deles, acrescente the fact that.
Despite the traffic, we got to the airport on time.
In spite of his age, my grandfather still plays badminton every morning.
Apesar da idade, meu avô ainda joga badminton toda manhã.
She failed the test despite studying all week.
Minh was exhausted, but despite this he finished the report.
O Minh estava exausto, mas, apesar disso, terminou o relatório.
Despite the fact that it was a public holiday, the shop was open.
Esse par corresponde ao par usado para motivos: because / because of.
| + oração | + substantivo / -ing | |
|---|---|---|
| Contraste | although / though / even though | despite / in spite of |
| Motivo | because / as / since | because of / due to |
Although I was very tired, I couldn't sleep.
Despite being very tired, I couldn't sleep.
(despite + -ing)
We went out in spite of the rain.
Saímos apesar da chuva.
We stayed in because of the rain.
Ficamos em casa por causa da chuva.
Teste rápido: se depois da lacuna vem um verbo conjugado (was, is, had, can…) → although / even though.
5.However, but e even if
But liga duas ideias numa mesma frase.
The hotel was lovely. However, the food was disappointing.
O hotel era lindo. No entanto, a comida foi decepcionante.
The hotel was lovely, but the food was disappointing.
The hotel was lovely; however, the food was disappointing.
(formal)
Even though fala de um fato (embora seja verdade), enquanto even if fala de uma possibilidade (aconteça ou não): Even though it's raining, I'll go (está chovendo). Even if it rains, I'll go (talvez chova, talvez não).
