Although / though / despite

Bu sözcükler zıtlık bildirir: ikinci şey, birincisinden beklenenin tersine olur (yağmur yağdı ama yine de dışarı çıktık). Önemli olan her sözcükten sonra ne geldiği.

Although'lu kısım cümlenin başına (virgül ekle) ya da ortasına gelebilir. Though aynı anlamdadır ama daha gündelik. Even though daha güçlüdür — “gerçekten öyle olsa da”. Even tek başına iki cümleyi bağlayamaz.

• Although the flat is small, it's very comfortable.

  Daire küçük olsa da çok rahat.

• We kept walking even though our feet hurt.

  Ayaklarımız acısa da yürümeye devam ettik.

• Even though I've lived here for ten years, I still get lost in the Old Quarter.

  On yıldır burada yaşamama rağmen Eski Mahalle'de hâlâ kayboluyorum.

• I like my job. The pay isn't great, though.

  İşimi seviyorum. Gerçi maaş pek iyi değil. (cümle sonunda though = ama, gündelik)

💡Türkçede “…-masına rağmen, yine de…” ya da “gerçi…, ama…” gibi iki bağlayıcı yan yana gelebilir. İngilizcede ise yalnızca bir bağlaç kullanılır: ya although ya but, ikisi birden asla. Although it was late, we kept talking. / It was late, but we kept talking.

Despite ve in spite of aynı anlamdadır (“…-e rağmen”). Arkalarından bir isim, bir zamir (this, that, everything…) ya da -ing gelir. Unutma: despite'ta of yoktur; in spite ise her zaman of ister. Arkalarından tam bir yan cümle getirmek için the fact that ekle.

• Despite the traffic, we got to the airport on time.

  Trafiğe rağmen havalimanına zamanında vardık.

• In spite of his age, my grandfather still plays badminton every morning.

  Yaşına rağmen dedem hâlâ her sabah badminton oynuyor.

• She failed the test despite studying all week.

  Bütün hafta çalışmasına rağmen sınavdan kaldı. (-ing'in öznesi ana cümleninkiyle aynı)

• Minh was exhausted, but despite this he finished the report.

  Minh bitkindi ama buna rağmen raporu bitirdi.

• Despite the fact that it was a public holiday, the shop was open.

  Resmî tatil olmasına rağmen dükkân açıktı.

Aynı fikir although (+ yan cümle) ya da despite (+ isim / -ing) ile söylenebilir. Bu ikili, sebep bildiren ikiliye benzer: because / because of. Türkçede ikisi de “-e rağmen” ile çevrilebildiği için arkadan gelen yapıya bak.

• Although I was very tired, I couldn't sleep.

  Çok yorgun olsam da uyuyamadım.

• Despite being very tired, I couldn't sleep.

  Çok yorgun olmama rağmen uyuyamadım. (despite + -ing)

• We went out in spite of the rain.

  Yağmura rağmen dışarı çıktık.

• We stayed in because of the rain.

  Yağmur yüzünden evde kaldık.

💡Hızlı kontrol: Boşluktan sonra çekimli bir fiil (was, is, had, can…) geliyorsa → although / even though. Yalnızca bir isim ya da -ing geliyorsa → despite / in spite of.

But iki fikri tek cümlede birleştirir. However yeni bir cümleye başlar (genellikle arkasından virgül gelir) ya da noktalı virgülden sonra gelir; but'tan daha resmîdir. Özenli yazıda iki cümleyi sadece virgül + however ile birleştirme.

• The hotel was lovely. However, the food was disappointing.

  Otel çok güzeldi. Ancak yemekler hayal kırıklığıydı.

• The hotel was lovely, but the food was disappointing.

  Otel çok güzeldi ama yemekler hayal kırıklığıydı.

• The hotel was lovely; however, the food was disappointing.

  Otel çok güzeldi; ancak yemekler hayal kırıklığıydı. (resmî)

💡Even though bir gerçek hakkındadır (öyle olduğu halde), even if ise bir olasılık hakkındadır (olsa da olmasa da): Even though it's raining, I'll go (yağmur yağıyor). Even if it rains, I'll go (belki yağar, belki yağmaz).

  Yalnızca bir bağlaç kullan.

• ✗Despite of the noise, the baby slept well.

  Despite'ta of yoktur.

  In spite, of ister.

• ✗Despite it was cold, we went swimming.

  Despite'tan sonra yan cümle gelmez.

  Although bir yan cümle ister.

  Even tek başına cümleleri bağlayamaz.
