“So … that” / “such … that”

So … that ve such … that “o kadar … ki” anlamına gelir: ilk kısım çok yüksek bir derece gösterir, that'li kısım da sonucu verir. Fark şu: so sıfat / zarfla, such ise isimle kullanılır.

Konuşmada that çoğu zaman atılır: I was so tired I fell asleep on the bus.

Boşluktan hemen sonra ne geldiğine bak. Yalnızca sıfat / zarf → so. Bir isim (önünde sıfat olsa bile) → such. Tekil sayılabilen isimle such'tan sonra a / an'ı koru.

• The test was so easy that everyone passed.

  Sınav o kadar kolaydı ki herkes geçti.

• It was such an easy test that everyone passed.

  O kadar kolay bir sınavdı ki herkes geçti. (arkasından isim (test) geliyor → such an)

• The kids were so noisy that the neighbours complained.

  Çocuklar o kadar gürültücüydü ki komşular şikâyet etti.

• They were such noisy kids that the neighbours complained.

  O kadar gürültücü çocuklardı ki komşular şikâyet etti. (çoğul → a yok)

• She speaks such good English that people think she grew up in London.

  O kadar iyi İngilizce konuşuyor ki insanlar onun Londra'da büyüdüğünü sanıyor. (English sayılamaz → a yok)

Normal bir fiilden sonra so + zarf kullan: He drove so carefully that… (so careful değil).

💡So ile such arasındaki seçim yalnızca arkadan ne geldiğine bağlıdır. Türkçede ikisi de “o kadar” diye çevrilir, bu yüzden kendine sor: “Boşluktan sonra bir isim var mı?” Evet → such (a); hayır → so. so + sıfat + a + isim kalıbı (so good a film) da var, ama çok resmî ve nadirdir.

Miktar bildiren bir sözcükten önce such değil so kullan: so many / so few + çoğul isim, so much / so little + sayılamayan isim. Such a lot of her iki tür isimle de kullanılır.

• There were so many motorbikes that the traffic didn't move for an hour.

  O kadar çok motosiklet vardı ki trafik bir saat boyunca hiç ilerlemedi.

• I've got so much homework that I can't go out tonight.

  O kadar çok ödevim var ki bu akşam dışarı çıkamam.

• So few students signed up that the class was cancelled.

  O kadar az öğrenci kaydoldu ki kurs iptal edildi.

• We had so little time that we skipped breakfast.

  O kadar az vaktimiz vardı ki kahvaltıyı atladık.

• There was such a lot of noise that I couldn't hear the teacher.

  O kadar çok gürültü vardı ki öğretmeni duyamadım.

Very yalnızca derece gösterir; arkasından that'li bir cümle gelemez. So … that bir sonuç verir. Too … to “mümkün ya da kabul edilebilir olandan fazla” demektir — “Too … to” / “enough to” dersine bak. That olmadan so / such sadece duygu katar, very'den daha güçlüdür.

• The coffee was so strong that I couldn't sleep.

  Kahve o kadar sertti ki uyuyamadım.

• The coffee was too strong for me to drink.

  Kahve içemeyeceğim kadar sertti.

💡very … that ya da too … that kullanma: I was so hungry that I ate two bowls (very hungry that / too hungry that değil).
