Although / though / despite
although/even though + 節、despite/in spite of + 名詞 か -ing — 対比・逆接
|---|---|---|
| although / though / even though | 節(主語 + 動詞) | Although it was raining, we went out. |
| despite / in spite of | 名詞、代名詞、または -ing | Despite the rain, we went out. |
| despite / in spite of the fact that | 節 | Despite the fact that it was raining, we went out. |
| but | 節(同じ文の中で) | It was raining, but we went out. |
| however | 新しい文(ピリオドやセミコロンの後ろ) | It was raining. However, we went out. |
2.Although / though / even though +
Although the flat is small, it's very comfortable.
We kept walking even though our feet hurt.
Even though I've lived here for ten years, I still get lost in the Old Quarter.
I like my job. The pay isn't great, though.
Although it was late, we kept talking. / It was late, but we kept talking.
3.Despite / in spite of + 名詞または -ing
Despite と in spite of は同じ意味です。
Despite the traffic, we got to the airport on time.
In spite of his age, my grandfather still plays badminton every morning.
She failed the test despite studying all week.
Minh was exhausted, but despite this he finished the report.
Despite the fact that it was a public holiday, the shop was open.
同じ内容を although(+ 節)でも despite(+ 名詞 / -ing)でも言えます。
|---|---|---|
| 逆接 | although / though / even though | despite / in spite of |
| 理由 | because / as / since | because of / due to |
Although I was very tired, I couldn't sleep.
Despite being very tired, I couldn't sleep.
(despite + -ing)
We went out in spite of the rain.
We stayed in because of the rain.
が来る → although / even though。名詞や -ing だけ → despite / in spite of。
5.However、but、even if
The hotel was lovely. However, the food was disappointing.
The hotel was lovely, but the food was disappointing.
The hotel was lovely; however, the food was disappointing.
Even though it's raining, I'll go(実際に雨が降っている)。Even if it rains, I'll go(降るかもしれないし、降らないかもしれない)。
Although it was late, but we kept talking.Although it was late, we kept talking. / It was late, but we kept talking.

in spite には of が必要です。
Despite it was cold, we went swimming.Although it was cold, we went swimming. / Despite the cold, we went swimming.

Even I was tired, I couldn't sleep.Even though I was tired, I couldn't sleep.
