As = when / because
中級形と使い方
As I was leaving, the phone rang. As it was late, we took a taxi.
1.as の2つの意味
as が節の頭に来るとき（as + 主語 + 動詞）、ふつうは2つの意味のどちらかです：when / while（〜するとき・〜しながら）か、because（〜なので）。文脈と動詞の時制が見分ける手がかりになります。

as にはほかの使い方もあります：as a teacher（〜として — レッスン「Like と as」を参照）、as tall as（比較）。このレッスンでは、2つの節をつなぐ as だけを扱います。
2.As = when, while
As は2つのことが同時に起こることを表します。長く続く背景の動作はよく過去進行形で、その途中で起こる短い動作は過去形で表します（レッスン「過去進行形」を参照）。Just as =「ちょうど〜したその瞬間に」。
As I was walking to work, I saw an accident.
歩いて仕事に向かっているとき、事故を見かけました。
The phone rang just as I was getting into the shower.
ちょうどシャワーに入ろうとしたときに電話が鳴りました。
My hands were shaking as I opened the letter.
手紙を開けるとき、手が震えていました。
as は、2つのことがいっしょに変化していくときにも使います：
As we got closer to the beach, we could hear the waves.
ビーチに近づくにつれて、波の音が聞こえてきました。
As the evening went on, the restaurant got busier.
夜が更けるにつれて、レストランは混んできました。
人生のある時期や長い期間には as を使いません：When I was a child, I lived in Hue（As I was a child… ではない — 聞き手には「子どもだったので」と聞こえてしまいます）。
3.As = because
As（と since）は理由を表しますが、ふつうは聞き手がすでに知っている理由や、話の中心ではない理由です。as の節は前に置かれることが多いです。理由そのものが伝えたい情報のとき — 特に Why…? への答え — には because を使います。「〜なので」の意味の as はイギリス英語でよく使われ、アメリカ英語では since や because のほうが好まれます。
As it was a public holiday, the banks were closed.
祝日だったので、銀行は閉まっていました。
As you're not busy, could you help me with this box?
忙しくないなら、この箱を運ぶのを手伝ってくれる？
We ordered pizza as nobody wanted to cook.
誰も料理をしたくなかったので、ピザを頼みました。
Since you're here, let's start the meeting.
あなたが来たので、会議を始めましょう。（since = as）
言語によっては「because … so …」を組み合わせて使います。英語ではどちらかひとつだけです：As it was late, we took a taxi. / It was late, so we took a taxi. 「As it was late, so we took a taxi」とは言いません。
4.as、when、while、because のどれ？

as は両方の意味に取れることがあります。はっきりさせたいときは while（時）か because（理由）を使いましょう。
As I was cooking, the lights went out.
料理をしていたら、停電しました。（時）
As I was cooking, I couldn't answer the phone.
料理をしていたので（していたとき）、電話に出られませんでした。（時とも理由とも取れる）
As Huy was ill, he stayed at home.
フイは具合が悪かったので、家にいました。（状態 → 理由）
5.よくある間違い
As it was late, so we took a taxi.As it was late, we took a taxi.
as と so をいっしょに使わないでください。
Like it was raining, we stayed home.As it was raining, we stayed home.
like に「〜なので」の意味はありません。
As I was a child, I lived in Hue.When I was a child, I lived in Hue.
人生のある時期には when を使います。
As I was cooking, I was cutting my finger.As I was cooking, I cut my finger.
短い動作は過去形にします。
Why did you leave early? — As I felt sick.Why did you leave early? — Because I felt sick.
Why への答えには because を使います。
例文
- As I was walking home, it started to rain.
- As it was a holiday, the streets were very quiet.
- As I didn't have any cash, I paid by card.
- Minh arrived as we were having dinner.
