As I was leaving, the phone rang. As it was late, we took a taxi.

1.as के दो मतलब

जब as किसी उपवाक्य की शुरुआत करता है (as + कर्ता + क्रिया), तो आमतौर पर इसके दो में से एक मतलब होता है: when / while या because। संदर्भ और क्रिया का tense दोनों में फ़र्क करने में मदद करते हैं।

कारण (= because / since)	ऐसा कारण जो सुनने वाला जानता है या जिसका अंदाज़ा लगा सकता है	As it was late, we took a taxi.

as के और भी प्रयोग हैं: as a teacher (किसी भूमिका में — पाठ “Like बनाम as” देखें), as tall as (तुलना)। यह पाठ सिर्फ़ उस as के बारे में है जो दो उपवाक्यों को जोड़ता है।

2.As = when, while

As दिखाता है कि दो बातें एक ही समय पर होती हैं। लंबा, पृष्ठभूमि वाला काम अक्सर Past Continuous में होता है, और उसी बीच होने वाला छोटा काम Past Simple में (पाठ “Past continuous” देखें)। Just as = ठीक उसी पल।

As I was walking to work, I saw an accident.
जब मैं पैदल ऑफ़िस जा रहा था, तब मैंने एक दुर्घटना देखी।
The phone rang just as I was getting into the shower.
ठीक उसी समय फ़ोन बजा जब मैं नहाने जा रहा था।
My hands were shaking as I opened the letter.
चिट्ठी खोलते समय मेरे हाथ काँप रहे थे।

as का प्रयोग तब भी होता है जब दो चीज़ें साथ-साथ बदलती हैं:

As we got closer to the beach, we could hear the waves.
जैसे-जैसे हम समुद्र तट के पास पहुँचे, हमें लहरों की आवाज़ सुनाई देने लगी।
As the evening went on, the restaurant got busier.
जैसे-जैसे शाम ढलती गई, रेस्टोरेंट में भीड़ बढ़ती गई।

जीवन के किसी दौर या लंबे समय के लिए as का प्रयोग न करें: When I was a child, I lived in Hue (As I was a child… नहीं — सुनने वाला इसे “because I was a child” समझेगा)।

3.As = because

As (और since) कारण बताते हैं, आमतौर पर ऐसा कारण जो सुनने वाला पहले से जानता है या जो मुख्य बात नहीं है। as वाला उपवाक्य अक्सर पहले आता है। जब कारण ही मुख्य ख़बर हो — ख़ासकर Why…? के जवाब में — तो because लगाएँ। “because” के मतलब में as ब्रिटिश English में आम है; अमेरिकी लोग since या because ज़्यादा बोलते हैं।

As it was a public holiday, the banks were closed.
चूँकि सरकारी छुट्टी थी, बैंक बंद थे।
As you're not busy, could you help me with this box?
चूँकि आप अभी फ़्री हैं, क्या आप यह डिब्बा उठाने में मेरी मदद कर सकते हैं?
We ordered pizza as nobody wanted to cook.

हिंदी में हम अक्सर “चूँकि / क्योंकि … इसलिए …” की जोड़ी बोलते हैं। English में इनमें से सिर्फ़ एक आता है: As it was late, we took a taxi. / It was late, so we took a taxi। “As it was late, so we took a taxi” नहीं।

4.As, when, while या because?

	किसके लिए	उदाहरण
when	एक पल, कोई छोटा काम, या जीवन का कोई दौर	When I was ten, we moved to Hue.
while	उस दौरान, जब कुछ और हो रहा हो	Someone called while you were out.
as	एक ही समय पर होने वाली या साथ-साथ बदलने वाली दो बातें; कहानियों में आम	As the bus pulled away, I realised I'd left my bag.
because	कारण ही मुख्य ख़बर है	I'm late because my alarm didn't go off.
as / since	जाना-पहचाना कारण, अक्सर शुरुआत में	As it's raining, let's stay in.

कभी-कभी as के दोनों मतलब निकल सकते हैं। अगर आप बिल्कुल साफ़ बात कहना चाहते हैं, तो while (समय) या because (कारण) लगाएँ।

As I was cooking, the lights went out.
जब मैं खाना बना रहा था, बत्ती चली गई। (समय)
As I was cooking, I couldn't answer the phone.
खाना बनाते समय मैं फ़ोन नहीं उठा सका। (समय या कारण — दोनों मतलब संभव हैं)
As Huy was ill, he stayed at home.
चूँकि ह्वी बीमार था, वह घर पर ही रहा। (स्थिति → कारण)

5.आम गलतियाँ

~~As it was late, so we took a taxi.~~
As it was late, we took a taxi.
as और so को एक साथ न लगाएँ।
~~Like it was raining, we stayed home.~~
As it was raining, we stayed home.
Like का मतलब “because” नहीं हो सकता।
~~As I was a child, I lived in Hue.~~
When I was a child, I lived in Hue.
जीवन के किसी दौर के लिए when लगाएँ।
~~As I was cooking, I was cutting my finger.~~
As I was cooking, I cut my finger.
छोटा काम Past Simple में आता है।
~~Why did you leave early? — As I felt sick.~~
Why did you leave early? — Because I felt sick.
Why का जवाब because से दें।

उदाहरण

As I was walking home, it started to rain.
As it was a holiday, the streets were very quiet.
As I didn't have any cash, I paid by card.
Minh arrived as we were having dinner.
