Lección 98 · Etapa 8: Adjetivos, adverbios y preposiciones
Verbo + preposición
IntermedioVerb + preposition
Forma y uso
depend on, listen to, wait for, deal with — verbos con una preposición fija
1.La estructura
Muchos verbos necesitan una preposición fija antes de su objeto: verbo + preposición + objeto. Cuando no hay objeto, la preposición desaparece. En las preguntas, la preposición suele ir al final.
| Estructura | Ejemplo |
|---|---|
| verbo + preposición + objeto | I'm waiting for the bus. |
| sin objeto → sin preposición | Wait here. / Listen! |
| pregunta: preposición al final | Who are you talking to? |
| verbo + objeto + preposición | She thanked me for the gift. |

Nuestros planes dependen del tiempo.

| for | wait / look / pay / ask / apply / search for | Who's going to pay for dinner? |
| at | look / laugh / stare / smile / point at | Please don't laugh at me. |
| on | depend / rely / count / concentrate / insist on | You can always count on me. |
| about | think / talk / worry / complain / dream / know about | Don't worry about the exam. |
| of | think / dream / hear / consist of | Have you heard of this band? |
| from | suffer / recover / hear from (tener noticias) | My grandmother suffers from back pain. |
| with | agree / deal / argue / share with | I don't agree with you. |
| in | believe / succeed / specialise in | Do you believe in ghosts? |
3.Verbo + objeto + preposición
Con algunos verbos, el objeto (a menudo una persona) va justo después del verbo, y luego la preposición.
- thank sb for sth
- apologise to sb for sth
- explain / describe sth to sb
- ask sb for sth
- remind sb of sth (hacer que alguien piense en algo); remind sb about sth (recordarle que no lo olvide)
- spend money / time on sth
- protect sb / sth from sth

4.Otra preposición, otro significado

| look for | intentar encontrar, buscar | I'm looking for my keys. |
| look after | cuidar | Who looks after your dog? |

| shout at / shout to | gritarle a alguien con enojo · gritar para que alguien te oiga | Don't shout at me! / She shouted to us from the window. |
Para pedir una opinión, las dos sirven: What do you think of / about my new haircut?
5.Verbos SIN preposición
En cambio, muchos verbos llevan su objeto directamente, sin preposición, aunque parezca natural poner una.
| Correcto | No | Significado |
|---|---|---|
| discuss the plan | discuss about the plan | hablar de, discutir sobre |
| enter the room | enter into the room | entrar en |
| marry someone | marry with someone | casarse con |
| answer the question | answer to the question | responder a |
| phone / call your mum | phone to your mum | llamar a |
| reach the station | reach to the station | llegar a |
| tell me the truth | tell to me the truth | decirle algo a alguien |
| contact us | contact with us | ponerse en contacto con |
- Los sustantivos relacionados sí llevan preposición: a discussion about, an answer to, contact with; y get married to (mira la lección “Sustantivo + preposición”).
- arrive in + una ciudad o un país; arrive at + un edificio o un lugar (estación, aeropuerto, hotel). No “arrive to”.
- arrive / get / go home: sin preposición antes de home.

Recuerda: discuss / marry / enter llevan objeto directo, pero explain necesita to: explain to me.
6.Errores comunes
