Lezione 98 · Tappa 8: Aggettivi, avverbi e preposizioni
Verbo + preposizione
IntermedioVerb + preposition
Forma e uso
depend on, listen to, wait for, deal with — verbi con una preposizione fissa
1.La struttura
Molti verbi richiedono una preposizione fissa prima del complemento oggetto: verbo + preposizione + oggetto. Quando non c'è oggetto, la preposizione sparisce. Nelle domande la preposizione di solito va alla fine.
| Struttura | Esempio |
|---|---|
| verbo + preposizione + oggetto | I'm waiting for the bus. |
| niente oggetto → niente preposizione | Wait here. / Listen! |
| domanda: preposizione alla fine | Who are you talking to? |
| verbo + oggetto + preposizione | She thanked me for the gift. |

I nostri programmi dipendono dal tempo.

2.Coppie comuni verbo + preposizione

| to | listen / talk / speak / belong / happen / reply / apologise to | Can I talk to you for a minute? |
| for | wait / look / pay / ask / apply / search for | Who's going to pay for dinner? |
| at | look / laugh / stare / smile / point at | Please don't laugh at me. |
| on | depend / rely / count / concentrate / insist on | You can always count on me. |
| about | think / talk / worry / complain / dream / know about | Don't worry about the exam. |
| of | think / dream / hear / consist of | Have you heard of this band? |
| from | suffer / recover / hear from (avere notizie) | My grandmother suffers from back pain. |
| with | agree / deal / argue / share with | I don't agree with you. |
| in | believe / succeed / specialise in | Do you believe in ghosts? |
3.Verbo + oggetto + preposizione
Con alcuni verbi l'oggetto (spesso una persona) viene subito dopo il verbo, e poi la preposizione.
- thank sb for sth
- apologise to sb for sth
- explain / describe sth to sb
- ask sb for sth
- remind sb of sth (far pensare a qualcosa); remind sb about sth (ricordare a qualcuno di non dimenticare)
- spend money / time on sth
- protect sb / sth from sth

4.Preposizione diversa, significato diverso
| Verbo | Significato | Esempio |
|---|---|---|
| look at | rivolgere lo sguardo a | Look at this photo. |
| look for | cercare | I'm looking for my keys. |
| look after | prendersi cura di | Who looks after your dog? |
| think about | riflettere su, considerare | I'm thinking about changing jobs. |
| think of | farsi venire un'idea, ricordare un nome | I can't think of a good name. |
| hear about | venire a sapere di qualcosa | Did you hear about the accident? |
| hear from | avere notizie da qualcuno | I haven't heard from Lan for months. |
| agree with / to / on | condividere un'opinione · accettare una proposta · decidere qualcosa insieme | I agree with you. / He agreed to the plan. / We agreed on a date. |
| shout at / shout to | gridare con rabbia · gridare per farsi sentire | Don't shout at me! / She shouted to us from the window. |
Per chiedere un'opinione vanno bene tutti e due: What do you think of / about my new haircut?
5.Verbi SENZA preposizione
Al contrario, molti verbi prendono l'oggetto direttamente, senza preposizione, anche se una preposizione sembrerebbe naturale.
| Giusto | Sbagliato | Significato |
|---|---|---|
| discuss the plan | discuss about the plan | parlare di |
| enter the room | enter into the room | entrare in |
| marry someone | marry with someone | sposarsi con |
| answer the question | answer to the question | rispondere a |
| phone / call your mum | phone to your mum | telefonare a |
| reach the station | reach to the station | arrivare a |
| tell me the truth | tell to me the truth | dire a qualcuno |
| contact us | contact with us | mettersi in contatto con |
- I sostantivi corrispondenti invece vogliono la preposizione: a discussion about, an answer to, contact with; e get married to (vedi la lezione “Nome + preposizione”).
- arrive in + una città o un paese; arrive at + un edificio o un luogo (station, airport, hotel). Mai “arrive to”.
- arrive / get / go home: nessuna preposizione prima di home.
- meet qualcuno non vuole with; meet with (soprattutto americano) si usa per incontri formali.

In italiano diciamo “discutere di”, “sposarsi con”, “entrare in”, “telefonare a”, quindi viene facile aggiungere una preposizione dove l'inglese non ce l'ha (discuss about, marry with, enter into), oppure toglierla dove serve (explain me). Ricorda: discuss / marry / enter prendono l'oggetto diretto, ma explain vuole to: explain to me.
6.Errori comuni
