Noun + preposition

Forma e uso

the reason for, a solution to, an increase in — nomi con una preposizione fissa

  • What's the reason for the delay?

Qual è il motivo del ritardo?

  • Nobody knows the answer to this question.

Nessuno sa la risposta a questa domanda.

  • There has been a big increase in the number of tourists.

  • The storm did serious damage to many houses.

3.Increase in o increase of? Reason o cause?

  • of + l'entità del cambiamento (un numero): an increase of 10%, a drop of 5,000 visitors.
  • Si possono usare tutti e due: a rise of 20% in the price of rice.
  • There was a 15% increase in rent this year.

    Quest'anno l'affitto è aumentato del 15%.

  • Sales grew, with an increase of 10% in March.

the cause of = ciò che ha fatto succedere qualcosa; the reason for = la spiegazione del perché.

  • Is there a reason for this rule?

4.Verbo o sostantivo

Verbo (senza preposizione)Sostantivo + preposizione
Prices increased.an increase in prices
Please answer the question.the answer to the question
We need more teachers.a need for more teachers
They discussed the plan.a discussion about the plan

Viene la tentazione di usare of o about dopo qualsiasi sostantivo (come il nostro “di”). In realtà: reason for, answer to, demand for; solo cause of usa of.
