1.Cấu trúc

Nhiều danh từ đi với một giới từ cố định: danh từ + giới từ + danh từ / V-ing. Giới từ sau danh từ nhiều khi khác với giới từ (hoặc không giới từ) sau động từ cùng gốc, nên hãy học cả cụm.

2.Danh từ + giới từ thông dụng

3.Increase in hay increase of? Reason hay cause?

Với các danh từ chỉ sự thay đổi (increase, rise, fall, drop, decrease):

in + thứ thay đổi: an increase in prices, a fall in sales.
of + mức thay đổi (con số): an increase of 10%, a drop of 5,000 visitors.
Có thể dùng cả hai: a rise of 20% in the price of rice.

There was a 15% increase in rent this year.
Năm nay tiền thuê nhà tăng 15%.
Sales grew, with an increase of 10% in March.
Doanh số tăng, riêng tháng Ba tăng 10%.

the cause of = thứ gây ra sự việc; the reason for = lý do giải thích vì sao.

Police are still looking for the cause of the fire.
Cảnh sát vẫn đang tìm nguyên nhân vụ cháy.
Is there a reason for this rule?

4.Động từ và danh từ cùng gốc

So sánh: động từ thường đi thẳng với tân ngữ, còn danh từ cùng gốc lại cần giới từ.

They discussed the plan.	a discussion about the plan

Many people demand change.	a demand for change

Tiếng Việt nói “lý do của”, “câu trả lời của”, “nhu cầu về” nên dễ dùng of hay about cho mọi thứ. Thực tế: reason for, answer to, demand for; chỉ cause of mới dùng of. Để ý thêm affect là động từ, effect là danh từ (effect on).
