IntermedioPhrasal verbs
Forma e uso
give up, find out, end up, come up with — verbo + particella con un significato proprio
1.Che cos'è un phrasal verb?
Un phrasal verb = verbo + particella: up, down, in, out, on, off, away, back, over…
|---|---|---|
| letterale, facile da indovinare | sit down, come in, go out | sedersi, entrare, uscire di casa |
| significato nuovo, da imparare | give up, find out, put off | smettere di provarci, scoprire, rimandare |
| un'espressione, più significati | take off | togliersi (vestiti, scarpe) · decollare (aereo) |
Please come in and sit down.
Entra pure e siediti.

| Particella | Significato frequente | Esempi |
|---|---|---|
| up | aumentare; completamente | turn up, go up, eat up, fill up |
| down | diminuire, abbassare | turn down, slow down, calm down |
| on / off | accendere / spegnere; indossare / togliere | turn on, turn off, put on, take off |
| out | fuori; fino a esaurimento; scoprire | go out, run out, find out |
| back | ritorno, restituzione | come back, give back, call back |
| away | andarsene; togliere, mettere via | go away, throw away, put away |
3.Con o senza oggetto
Alcuni phrasal verb non hanno oggetto: get up, wake up, grow up, break down, set off, take off (aereo), come back, go on.
I usually get up at six.
Di solito mi alzo alle sei.
Our car broke down on the highway.
I grew up in a small village near Hue.
I woke up at 7. / Can you wake me up at 7?
Mi sono svegliato alle 7. / Mi puoi svegliare alle 7?
Don't give up! / I've given up sugar.
Non mollare! / Ho smesso con lo zucchero.
4.Separabili e inseparabili
Un oggetto che è un pronome (it, them, me, him…) deve andare in mezzo.
| Verbo | Oggetto sostantivo | Oggetto pronome |
|---|---|---|
| turn off | turn off the light / turn the light off | turn it off (non: turn off it) |
| pick up | pick up the kids / pick the kids up | pick them up |
| put on | put on your jacket / put your jacket on | put it on |
| throw away | throw away the box / throw the box away | throw it away |
| give back | give back the money / give the money back | give it back |
La regola d'oro: con i verbi separabili il pronome va sempre in mezzo: turn it off, pick me up, try them on. Nel parlato l'accento cade di solito sulla particella: turn it OFF, pick me UP, quindi pronuncia bene il suo suono finale.
Quelli inseparabili: l'oggetto va sempre dopo l'espressione intera, anche se è un pronome: look after, look for, get over, come across, run into, take after. I verbi di tre parole funzionano allo stesso modo: run out of, look forward to, get on with, come up with, put up with.
My grandma looks after me when my parents are at work.
She takes after her mother.
Ha preso da sua madre.
I ran into an old friend at the supermarket.
I'm looking forward to seeing you.
Non vedo l'ora di vederti. (to è una preposizione → seeing)
We need to come up with a better idea.
|---|---|---|
| find out | discover | venire a sapere un fatto |
| put off | postpone | spostare più avanti |
| come up with | think of / suggest | farsi venire un'idea |
