Phrasal verbs
IntermédioForma e uso
give up, find out, end up, come up with — verbo + partícula com sentido próprio
1.O que é um phrasal verb?
Um phrasal verb = verbo + partícula: up, down, in, out, on, off, away, back, over…
|---|---|---|
| literal, fácil de adivinhar | sit down, come in, go out | sentar-se, entrar, sair de casa |
| sentido novo, precisa ser aprendido | give up, find out, put off | desistir, descobrir, adiar |
| uma expressão, vários sentidos | take off | tirar (roupa, sapatos) · decolar (avião) |
Please come in and sit down.
Por favor, entre e sente-se.
My dad gave up smoking last year.
Meu pai parou de fumar no ano passado.
I just found out that Lan is moving to Japan.
We ran out of rice, so we had noodles.
Acabou o arroz, então a gente comeu macarrão.
2.Sentidos comuns das partículas
As partículas nem sempre têm um sentido claro, mas alguns sentidos aparecem toda hora — conhecê-los ajuda você a adivinhar phrasal verbs novos.
| Partícula | Sentido comum | Exemplos |
|---|---|---|
| up | aumentar; completamente | turn up, go up, eat up, fill up |
| down | diminuir, baixar | turn down, slow down, calm down |
| on / off | começar / parar de funcionar; vestir / tirar | turn on, turn off, put on, take off |
| out | para fora; até não sobrar nada; descobrir | go out, run out, find out |
| back | voltar, devolver | come back, give back, call back |
| away | ir embora; tirar, guardar em algum lugar | go away, throw away, put away |
3.Com ou sem objeto
Alguns phrasal verbs não têm objeto: get up, wake up, grow up, break down, set off, take off (avião), come back, go on.
I usually get up at six.
Normalmente eu me levanto às seis.
Our car broke down on the highway.
Nosso carro quebrou na rodovia.
I grew up in a small village near Hue.
I woke up at 7. / Can you wake me up at 7?
Acordei às 7. / Você pode me acordar às 7?
Don't give up! / I've given up sugar.
Um objeto que é pronome (it, them, me, him…) tem que ficar no meio.
| Verbo | Objeto substantivo | Objeto pronome |
|---|---|---|
| turn off | turn off the light / turn the light off | turn it off (não: turn off it) |
| pick up | pick up the kids / pick the kids up | pick them up |
| put on | put on your jacket / put your jacket on | put it on |
| throw away | throw away the box / throw the box away | throw it away |
| give back | give back the money / give the money back | give it back |
A regra de ouro: com verbos separáveis, o pronome sempre fica no meio — turn it off, pick me up, try them on. Na fala, a partícula normalmente é a parte tônica: turn it OFF, pick me UP — então pronuncie bem o som final dela.
Os inseparáveis: o objeto sempre vem depois da expressão inteira, mesmo que seja um pronome: look after, look for, get over, come across, run into, take after. Os verbos de três palavras funcionam do mesmo jeito: run out of, look forward to, get on with, come up with, put up with.
My grandma looks after me when my parents are at work.
She takes after her mother.
Ela puxou à mãe.
I ran into an old friend at the supermarket.
I'm looking forward to seeing you.
Estou ansioso para ver você. (to é uma preposição → seeing)
We need to come up with a better idea.
|---|---|---|
| find out | discover | ficar sabendo de um fato |
| put off | postpone | passar para mais tarde |
| come up with | think of / suggest | ter uma ideia |
| turn down | refuse / reject | dizer não a |
| look into | investigate | examinar |
| go up | increase / rise | ficar mais alto, subir |
