Verbo + preposição

Intermédio

Verb + preposition

Forma e uso

depend on, listen to, wait for, deal with — verbos com preposição fixa

1.A estrutura

EstruturaExemplo
verbo + preposição + objetoI'm waiting for the bus.
sem objeto → sem preposiçãoWait here. / Listen!
pergunta: preposição no finalWho are you talking to?
verbo + objeto + preposiçãoShe thanked me for the gift.

  • thank sb for sth
  • apologise to sb for sth
  • explain / describe sth to sb
  • ask sb for sth

  • Os substantivos relacionados levam preposição: a discussion about, an answer to, contact with; e get married to (veja a lição “Substantivo + preposição”).
  • arrive in + uma cidade ou um país; arrive at + um prédio ou um lugar (station, airport, hotel). Nunca “arrive to”.

Em português dizemos “discutir sobre”, “casar com”, “entrar na sala”, “ligar para”, e por isso é fácil acrescentar uma preposição onde o inglês não tem (discuss about, marry with, enter into) — ou tirá-la onde o inglês precisa (explain me). Lembre: discuss / marry / enter levam objeto direto, mas explain precisa de to: explain to me.
