1.التركيب
كثير من الأفعال تحتاج إلى حرف جر ثابت قبل مفعولها: فعل + حرف جر + مفعول به. وعندما لا يوجد مفعول به، يُحذف حرف الجر. وفي الأسئلة يأتي حرف الجر عادةً في النهاية.

3.فعل + مفعول به + حرف جر
مع بعض الأفعال يأتي المفعول به (غالبًا شخص) بعد الفعل مباشرةً، ثم حرف الجر.
- thank sb for sth
- apologise to sb for sth
- explain / describe sth to sb
- ask sb for sth
- remind sb of sth (يجعله يتذكّره أو يفكر فيه)؛ remind sb about sth (يقول له ألّا ينسى)
- spend money / time on sth
- protect sb / sth from sth

4.حرف جر مختلف، معنى مختلف

| agree with / to / on | يتفق في الرأي · يقبل اقتراحًا · يتفقون معًا على قرار | I agree with you. / He agreed to the plan. / We agreed on a date. |
| shout at / shout to | يصرخ بغضب · يصرخ ليسمعه أحد | Don't shout at me! / She shouted to us from the window. |

5.أفعال بلا حرف جر
في المقابل، كثير من الأفعال تأخذ مفعولها مباشرةً بلا حرف جر — حتى لو بدا حرف الجر طبيعيًا.

- أما الأسماء المرتبطة بها فتأخذ حرف جر: a discussion about، an answer to، contact with؛ و get married to (انظر درس “اسم + حرف جر”).
- arrive in + مدينة أو بلد؛ arrive at + مبنى أو مكان (station, airport, hotel). وليس “arrive to”.
- arrive / get / go home: لا حرف جر قبل home.
- meet شخصًا لا تحتاج إلى with؛ أما meet with (أمريكية في الغالب) فتُستخدم للاجتماعات الرسمية.

كثيرًا ما يضيف المتعلمون حرف جر حيث لا تحتاجه الإنجليزية (discuss about, marry with, enter into) — وهذا يحدث خصوصًا عندما نترجم «يتحدث عن» و«يتزوج من» — أو يحذفونه حيث تحتاجه (explain me). تذكّر: discuss / marry / enter تأخذ مفعولًا مباشرًا، لكن explain تحتاج إلى to: explain to me.
6.أخطاء شائعة
