Leçon 98 · Étape 8: Adjectifs, adverbes et prépositions
Verbe + préposition
IntermédiaireVerb + preposition
Forme et emploi
depend on, listen to, wait for, deal with — verbes avec une préposition fixe
| Structure | Exemple |
|---|---|
| verbe + préposition + complément | I'm waiting for the bus. |
Listen! |
| question : préposition à la fin | Who are you talking to? |
| verbe + complément + préposition | She thanked me for the gift. |
Our plans depend on the weather.
Nos projets dépendent de la météo.
Does this bag belong to you?

I don't know how to deal with this problem.

2.Verbes + prépositions courants
| Préposition | Verbes | Exemple |
|---|---|---|
| to | listen / talk / speak / belong / happen / reply / apologise to | Can I talk to you for a minute? |
| for | wait / look / pay / ask / apply / search for | Who's going to pay for dinner? |
| at | look / laugh / stare / smile / point at | Please don't laugh at me. |
| on | depend / rely / count / concentrate / insist on | You can always count on me. |
| about | think / talk / worry / complain / dream / know about | Don't worry about the exam. |
| of | think / dream / hear / consist of | Have you heard of this band? |
| from | suffer / recover / hear from (avoir des nouvelles) | My grandmother suffers from back pain. |
| with | agree / deal / argue / share with | I don't agree with you. |
| in | believe / succeed / specialise in | Do you believe in ghosts? |
- thank sb for sth
- apologise to sb for sth
- explain / describe sth to sb
- ask sb for sth
- remind sb of sth (faire penser à quelque chose) ; remind sb about sth (rappeler à quelqu'un de ne pas oublier)
- spend money / time on sth
- protect sb / sth from sth

4.Une autre préposition, un autre sens
| Verbe | Sens | Exemple |
|---|---|---|
| look at | diriger son regard vers, regarder | Look at this photo. |
| look for | essayer de trouver, chercher | I'm looking for my keys. |
| look after | s'occuper de | Who looks after your dog? |
| think about | réfléchir à, envisager | I'm thinking about changing jobs. |
| think of | avoir une idée, se rappeler un nom | I can't think of a good name. |
| hear about | entendre parler de quelque chose | Did you hear about the accident? |
| hear from | avoir des nouvelles de quelqu'un | I haven't heard from Lan for months. |
| agree with / to / on | partager un avis · accepter une proposition · se mettre d'accord sur quelque chose | I agree with you. / He agreed to the plan. / We agreed on a date. |
| shout at / shout to | crier sur quelqu'un (avec colère) · crier pour que quelqu'un entende | Don't shout at me! / She shouted to us from the window. |
What do you think of / about my new haircut?
| Correct | Incorrect | Sens |
|---|---|---|
| discuss the plan | discuss about the plan | parler de, discuter de |
| enter the room | enter into the room | entrer dans |
| marry someone | marry with someone | se marier avec, épouser |
| answer the question | answer to the question | répondre à |
| phone / call your mum | phone to your mum | téléphoner à |
| reach the station | reach to the station | arriver à |
| tell me the truth | tell to me the truth | dire à quelqu'un |
| contact us | contact with us | contacter, prendre contact avec |
- Les noms correspondants, eux, prennent une préposition : a discussion about, an answer to, contact with ; et get married to (voir la leçon « Nom + préposition »).
- arrive in + une ville ou un pays ; arrive at + un bâtiment ou un lieu (gare, aéroport, hôtel). Jamais « arrive to ».
- arrive / get / go home : pas de préposition devant home.
- meet quelqu'un se dit sans with ; meet with (surtout américain) s'emploie pour des réunions officielles.
Let's discuss the plan for Tet.
Discutons du programme pour le Têt.
Everyone stood up when the teacher entered the room.
My aunt married a man from Hue last year.
Call me when you arrive at the station.
Appelle-moi quand tu arrives à la gare.
On ajoute souvent une préposition là où l'anglais n'en a pas, parce que le français en a une (« discuter de » → discuss about, « se marier avec » → marry with, « entrer dans » → enter into), ou on l'oublie là où l'anglais en a besoin (explain me). À retenir : discuss / marry / enter prennent un complément direct, mais explain a besoin de to : explain to me.
6.Erreurs fréquentes
