You ready?
6
So today, I'm going to talk about fears.
7
This is an interesting topic because there are so many fears that exist.
8
Some people are afraid of some things that other people have no problem with.
9
That's why I think that fear is a very personal thing.
10
Let's start with one of the most common fears, heights.
11
I would guess that almost half of the people that I know are afraid of heights.
12
This is a really natural thing though, because being up high often means danger.
13
Anybody would be afraid of falling from a high place.
14
However, some people have a more extreme fear of heights.
15
They usually hate flying and they never walk near the edge of high places.
16
I don't usually have a problem with heights, but there have been times when I got a little nervous when I looked over the edge of a high place.
17
But I don't have any fear of flying, except sometimes during takeoff and landing.
18
How about you?
19
Are you afraid of heights or flying?
20
Alright, another really common fear is the fear of spiders or bugs in general.
21
If you or someone you know has this fear, then you know it can be a really intense fear.
22
For some people, if they see even just a little spider in their room, they run away screaming.
23
I'm not terrified of all spiders, but if there's a really big spider, then I'm definitely afraid.
24
I think most people in the world would be afraid of a really big spider.
25
One thing that scares me more than spiders is cockroaches.
26
For me, these are the worst.
27
I know that they can't hurt me, but I just really hate them.
28
If I see a big cockroach in my room or in the bathroom, I get pretty freaked out.
29
can't handle cockroaches.
30
Alright, so another common fear is the fear of the dark.
31
I think that everyone has at least a little fear of the dark.
32
Of course, most adults aren't super afraid of the dark in most situations, but in some situations, they can be afraid.
33
For example, if you're alone in a forest at night, I'm sure you'll be at least a little afraid of the dark.
34
I'm not that scared of the dark, but obviously I might get a little nervous if I'm alone in a dark forest or something.
35
Okay, lastly, let's talk about the fear of clowns.
36
This is a really popular one, and it's not just a childhood fear.
37
A lot of adults are afraid of clowns, too.
38
I've never had a problem with this fear, but I know several people that do.
39
I can understand why people might be afraid of them, because they look really creepy.
40
And of course, there are several movies that feature killer clowns that also contribute to people's fear of clowns.
41
Even though I'm not afraid of clowns, I don't really like them.
42
Alright, that's all for today.
43
Leave a comment and tell me what your greatest fear is.

Why practice speaking with this video?

This A2 English listening practice video is not just about listening; it's an excellent opportunity to improve your English pronunciation by practicing your speaking skills. The speaker discusses a relatable topic—fears—that many can connect with. Engaging with such content can make the learning experience more enjoyable and meaningful. As you listen, try pausing the video to repeat phrases or sentences. This technique, known as shadow speech, helps reinforce language patterns and improve your fluency. Additionally, discussing fears allows for personal expression—consider sharing your own fears in English, enhancing your vocabulary and confidence in speaking.

Grammar & Expressions in Context

Throughout the video, there are several key grammatical structures and expressions that are beneficial for A2 learners:

  • “I'm afraid of…” - This phrase is critical for expressing fears. It’s straightforward and applicable when discussing other emotions or concerns, such as “I’m afraid of public speaking.”
  • “It can be…” - The speaker uses this expression to generalize feelings associated with fears, helping learners to create broader statements like “It can be scary to try new things.”
  • “How about you?” - This phrase invites conversation and is useful for engaging others in dialogue. It encourages learners to ask questions, vital for effective communication.
  • “I think most people would be…” - This structure allows you to express opinions and can help you present arguments or observations in discussions.

Common Pronunciation Traps

As you practice speaking along with the video, be mindful of certain pronunciation challenges:

  • “heights” - The 'ei' sound can be tricky for some learners. Practice pronouncing it clearly to avoid confusion with words like “heats.”
  • “cockroaches” - This longer word contains multiple syllables. Breaking it down into parts (cock-roach-es) can make it easier to pronounce correctly.
  • “creepy” - The 'ee' vowel sound is often pronounced incorrectly. Focus on elongating that sound to enhance your clarity during conversations.

Using a shadowing app can further assist in mastering these tricky words. Practicing with a tool that allows you to replay audio segments can improve your pronunciation and fluency significantly. To truly benefit from this practice, try to incorporate these expressions and focus on pronunciation as you engage with various English speaking practice opportunities.
