6
You ready?
7
So today, I'm going to talk about dentist appointments.
8
Personally, I don't like this topic at all because I don't like going to the dentist.
9
But it's a pretty important topic,
10
so why don't we talk about it?
11
In the US, going to the dentist is a normal part of people's lives.
12
Many people go to the dentist once,
13
twice, or three times a year for routine checkups.
14
During a normal checkup, the dentist cleans your teeth and checks to see if you have any major problems.
15
I hate the way that dentists clean teeth,
16
because for me, it feels really uncomfortable.
17
First, they use a tool to scrape off all the plaque.
18
Plaque is the stuff that forms on your teeth from eating things such as sugar.
19
It's not good to have a lot of plaque,
20
so the dentist removes it during your checkup.
21
I think it's uncomfortable when they do this,
22
but I know it's necessary.
23
Sometimes the dentist needs to remove plaque from around your gums.
24
Your gums are the pink parts above and below your teeth.
25
If your gums are unhealthy,
26
they can bleed when the dentist cleans your mouth.
27
When I was younger, my gums would always bleed during my dentist appointments.
28
So, after the dentist removes your plaque,
29
they usually brush and floss your teeth.
30
Then, they check for cavities.
31
If you don't take good care of your teeth,
32
It's easy to develop cavities.
33
Children often get a lot of cavities because they eat a lot of sugar and they don't clean their teeth well.
34
I had three cavities when I was younger,
35
but now I take better care of my teeth.
36
I hope I don't get any more cavities in the future.
37
Nowadays, I usually brush my teeth twice a day,
38
and I floss twice a day, too.
39
In the US, it's normal for people to brush their teeth in the morning and at night,
40
but many people don't floss.
41
I rarely flossed when I was younger,
42
and it was the same for most of my friends.
43
But now it feels really weird if I don't floss because I've developed the habit.
44
How about you?
45
How often do you brush and floss your teeth?
46
So another reason why people go to the dentist or orthodontist is for braces.
47
I got braces when I was 21 and I had them until I was 23.
48
I really hated having braces.
49
They looked horrible and they made it really hard to clean my teeth.
50
I remember how much I hated flossing when I had braces.
51
I'm glad I don't have them anymore.
52
Lastly, let's talk about the price of going to the dentist or orthodontist.
53
In the US, many people have dental insurance,
54
which covers most of the cost.
55
But if you don't have insurance,
56
it can be really expensive.
57
In other countries, it's much cheaper.
58
For example, in Mexico, it's cheap and easy to see a dentist or get braces.
59
You probably don't need insurance because the price usually isn't that high.
60
But of course, some procedures are more expensive than others,
61
and it could be a lot of money if you need a lot of work done on your mouth.
62
But overall, dental care is much more expensive in the US.
63
Alright that's all for today.
64
Leave a comment and tell me if you go to the dentist regularly.
65
And remember to subscribe to the channel,

Why practice speaking with this video?

Engaging with the "A2 English Listening Practice - Dentist" video is an excellent opportunity to enhance your speaking skills while gaining insights into everyday life. The topic of dentist appointments may not seem exciting, but discussing it in English helps you learn essential vocabulary and phrases regularly used in conversations. By shadowing the speaker, you can mimic their pronunciation and intonation, which is a critical aspect of the shadowing technique. This method can significantly improve your English pronunciation and help you to build confidence when discussing vital topics like health and personal care.

Grammar & Expressions in Context

The speaker in this video utilizes various key structures that are fundamental for English learners:

  • Present simple tense: "I brush my teeth twice a day" is used to describe daily routines. This structure is essential for conveying habitual actions.
  • Frequency adverbs: Phrases like "once, twice, or three times a year" help to express regularity in actions. Familiarizing yourself with similar expressions will enable you to discuss various topics effectively.
  • First conditional: "If you don't take good care of your teeth, it's easy to develop cavities." This conditional form illustrates how to express cause and effect, which is helpful in making recommendations or warnings.

By practicing these structures, you'll be able to formulate sentences that are clear and convey your thoughts more effectively.

Common Pronunciation Traps

While listening to the video, pay close attention to the pronunciation of specific words, which can be challenging:

  • Cavities: Be careful with the 'c' and 'v' sounds; frequently mispronounced, they can lead to misunderstandings.
  • Floss: The double 's' can be tricky; practice saying it clearly to ensure you are understood.
  • Plaque: This word may not follow regular pronunciation rules, so take extra time to practice the 'qu' sound.

Utilizing resources like a shadow speak or a shadowing app can help you tackle these tricky pronunciations while improving your overall fluency. By focusing on these details, you can enhance your listening and speaking skills simultaneously, making your learning experience both effective and enjoyable.
