Never have I…, Had I known… — עזר לפני הנושא להדגשה
1.צורה
היפוך (Inversion) מתרחש כאשר מילה או ביטוי שלילה או הגבלה (כמו never, rarely, only then, not until…) מועברים להתחלת המשפט כדי להדגיש. שאר המשפט עובר לסדר של שאלה: auxiliary + subject + main verb. המשמעות נשארת זהה — המשפט פשוט נשמע רשמי או דרמטי יותר.

בחרו את הפועל העזר (auxiliary) בדיוק כפי שהייתם בוחרים בשאלה: אם כבר יש אחד (have, be, can, will, should…), העבירו אותו; בהווה פשוט / עבר פשוט (present simple / past simple), השתמשו בdo / does / did והפועל הראשי יהיה בצורת base form.
היפוך מתרחש רק כאשר מילת השלילה נמצאת בתחילת המשפט. כאשר היא במקומה הרגיל, שמרו על סדר רגיל: I have never seen…, We rarely eat out. וכאשר only / hardly שייכים לsubject, אין היפוך: Only my brother knows the password. Hardly anyone came.
2.לאחר מילים של שלילה או הגבלה
1. Never / Rarely / Seldom / At no time / Nowhere / Never again – שימו לב: כאשר מתחילים משפטים במילים אלו, יש להפוך את סדר המילים (כמו בשאלות).
Seldom have I felt so welcome in a new city.
לעיתים רחוקות הרגשתי כל כך רצוי בעיר חדשה.
At no time did anyone tell us the flight was cancelled.
אף פעם לא אמרו לנו שהטיסה בוטלה.
Never again will I lend him money.
לעולם לא אלווה לו כסף שוב.
Nowhere else can you see so many motorbikes at once.
בשום מקום אחר אי אפשר לראות כל כך הרבה אופנועים בבת אחת.
2. Hardly / Scarcely … when ו-No sooner … than — דבר אחד קורה מיד אחרי השני, בדרך כלל עם had + V3
Hardly had I closed my eyes when the alarm went off.
ברגע שעצמתי עיניים, השעון המעורר צלצל.
No sooner had the match started than the rain came down.
ברגע שהמשחק התחיל, ירד גשם.
3. Only when / Only after / Only if / Only then / Not until — ההיפוך נמצא במשפט הראשי, לא בתוך when / after / if / until
Only when the lights came on did we see the mess.
רק כשהאורות נדלקו, ראינו את הבלגן.
Not until I moved abroad did I appreciate my mum's cooking.
רק כשעברתי לגור בחו"ל, הערכתי את הבישולים של אמא שלי.
Only if you book early will you get a discount.
רק אם תזמינו מוקדם, תקבלו הנחה.
Only then did I realise how lucky I was.
רק אז הבנתי כמה הייתי בר מזל.
4. Little / Under no circumstances / On no account / Not only – כאשר פותחים משפטים במילים אלו, יש להפוך את סדר המילים (כמו בשאלות).
Little did he know that his friends were planning a surprise.
הוא לא ידע שחבריו מתכננים לו הפתעה.
On no account should you share your password.
בשום אופן אל תשתפו את הסיסמה שלכם.
Not only was the hotel noisy, but it was also dirty.
המלון לא היה רק רועש, אלא גם מלוכלך.
3.היפוך במקום if
באנגלית רשמית אפשר להשמיט את if ולהעביר את had / should / were לפני הנושא. רק שלוש המילים האלו פועלות כך. ראו גם את השיעורים "משפט תנאי שלישי" (Third conditional) ו"משפט תנאי שני" (Second conditional).

יש הבדל ברמת הרשמיות: Should you… נפוץ מאוד במיילים עסקיים ובהודעות; Had I known… מתאים גם לדיבור; Were I… מאוד רשמי ונשמע ספרותי בשיחה.
בשלילה, not בא אחרי הנושא ואינו מקוצר: Had it not rained… / Were it not for… — לא “Hadn't it rained…”.
4.If … should, Should you…: פחות סביר
Should you… בטבלה למעלה מגיע מ-if + should + פועל בסיס. Should כאן אינו עצה. הוא גורם לאירוע להיראות פחות סביר, כמו "אם זה יקרה, אם כי אני לא באמת מצפה לכך", ולכן הוא מתאים להצעות עזרה והודעות. שתי הצורות קצת רשמיות, והמשפט השני יכול להיות הוראה, will או can.

אותו should יכול לבוא גם אחרי in case, כדי להדגיש שמשהו כנראה לא יקרה: in case + should + פועל בסיס. זה די רשמי ובעיקר בריטי; אחרי in case הבחירה הרגילה היא הווה פשוט. Will לא בא אחרי in case.
I've packed some medicine in case anyone should feel ill.
ארזתי קצת תרופות למקרה שמישהו ירגיש לא טוב.
I always keep some cash in case my card doesn't work.
הצורה הרגילה יותר
Should you needed help, ask at the front desk.Should you need help, ask at the front desk.
אחרי should משתמשים בפועל בסיס.
Keep this number in case you will get lost.Keep this number in case you get lost. / Keep this number in case you should get lost.
אחרי in case משתמשים בהווה פשוט או ב-should + פועל בסיס, לא ב-will.
5.היפוך בדיבור יומיומי
לא כל היפוך הוא רשמי. יש סוגים שנשמעים כל יום:
I'm starving. — So am I.
אני מת מרעב. — גם אני.
Lan didn't enjoy the film, and neither did her husband.
לן לא נהנתה מהסרט, וגם בעלה לא.
I can't swim. — Nor can I.
אני לא יודע לשחות. — גם אני לא.
Look, here comes the bus!
תראו, הנה האוטובוס מגיע!
עם Here / There + פועל תנועה, אין להפוך כאשר הנושא הוא כינוי גוף: Here it comes (לא: Here comes it).
6.רמת רשמיות (Register)

בשיחה, סדר רגיל (I've never seen anything like it) נשמע טבעי יותר; היפוך רשמי בשיחה נשמע דרמטי או בצחוק. בחיבור IELTS או במכתב רשמי, היפוך אחד או שניים במקומות הנכונים יחזקו את הכתיבה — רק לא להגזים.
7.טעויות נפוצות
Never I will forget your kindness.Never will I forget your kindness.
כאשר never בתחילת המשפט → להפוך את הפועל העזר.
Rarely we eat out during the week.Rarely do we eat out during the week.
הווה פשוט משתמש ב-do להיפוך.
Only after I paid did I realised the price was wrong.Only after I paid did I realise the price was wrong.
אחרי did, יש להשתמש ב-base form.
Not until I got home I realised I had lost my wallet.Not until I got home did I realise I had lost my wallet.
המשפט הראשי מתהפך.
Hadn't it rained, we would have gone to the beach.Had it not rained, we would have gone to the beach.
Not בא אחרי הנושא, לא מקוצר.
Hardly had we started eating than the lights went out.Hardly had we started eating when the lights went out.
Hardly … when, no sooner … than – מבנים אלו משמשים לתיאור אירועים שקרו בזה אחר זה, כאשר האירוע השני התרחש מיד אחרי הראשון.
