1.צורה
not only A but (also) B מוסיף נקודה שנייה, B, לנקודה ראשונה, A — ובדרך כלל B חזק או מפתיע יותר. A ו-B יכולים להיות שמות תואר, שמות עצם, פעלים, צירופי יחס או משפטים שלמים.

2.שמרו על שני החלקים מקבילים

3.Not only בתחילת משפט: היפוך
להדגשה נוספת, אפשר להעביר את Not only לתחילת המשפט. אז החלק הראשון מתהפך — הפועל העזר בא לפני הנושא, כמו בשאלה. החלק השני נשאר בסדר רגיל: but + subject + (auxiliary) + also + verb.
