Now turn to part two, questions eight to thirteen.

You will hear a woman called Sarah talking to a group of people about her painting.
3
Now we are ready to start.
4
Listen carefully.
5
You will hear the recording twice.
6
Well, good evening everyone.
7
I've come along to talk to you about my painting.
8
It was just a hobby, but it's really more than that now.
9
I used to paint in the evenings after work, but now I work four days a week instead of five.
10
That means I spend Friday, Saturday and Sunday on my painting.
11
I have pictures in local exhibitions at least once a month.
12
I'd love to give up my job and spend all my time painting, but I work with computers and I earn more that way.
13
I do make some money from selling my pictures, enough to pay for all my paint, brushes and paper and a few art lessons.
14
I'd love to go to art college full time for three years, but I've got all the rent on my flat to pay and a car to run.
15
I first became interested in art when I was at primary school.
16
I used to go out with some paper and a few pencils during break time and draw anything I saw.
17
Houses, gardens, people.
18
Then at secondary school we had art classes twice a week
19
and I learnt how to use chalk and then different kinds of paint, watercolours, oils and so on.
20
Those classes were really useful for me, and ever since then I've had lessons of some kind.
21
I've attended evening classes and been on what they call painting holidays, where you go out into the countryside and paint during the day,
22
and then sit and discuss your work with a teacher and the other artists after dinner.
23
Those holidays are great.
24

I love walking in the Scottish mountains and there are so many different birds to see, especially in spring.
30
Well, I'm going to finish now by showing you a video of the places I visited.
31
After that, there'll be a chance to relax with a cup of coffee and then there'll be time for some questions.

  • 「It was just a hobby, but it's really more than that now.」(ただの趣味だったんですが、今はもっとそれ以上のものです)
  • 「I used to paint in the evenings after work, but now...」(昔は仕事の後の夜に描いていましたが、今は…)
  • 「I'd love to... but I...」(…
  • 「ever since then I've had lessons of some kind」(それ以来、いろんな形でレッスンを受けています)
  • 「where you go out into the countryside and paint during the day」(昼間は田舎に出かけて描くんです)
