For / since / ago

For、since、ago はどれも時間について話しますが、表し方がそれぞれ違います：

例：今日は木曜日で、ランは月曜日にハノイに着きました。同じことを3通りに言えます：

• Lan has been in Hanoi for three days.

  ランは3日間ハノイにいます。

• Lan has been in Hanoi since Monday.

  ランは月曜日からハノイにいます。

• Lan arrived in Hanoi three days ago.

  ランは3日前にハノイに着きました。

💡よくある落とし穴が2つあります。「2019年から始まって今も続いている」は since 2019 です — from はふつう後ろに to/until が必要です（from 2019 to 2022）。「今から2年前」は two years ago で、「前」につられて before two years と言わないようにしましょう。

For は How long? に答える語で、現在完了形だけでなくどの時制でも使えます。

• I've had this phone for three years.

  このスマホは3年使っています。（今も持っている）

• We lived in Hue for two years, and then we moved to Saigon.

  私たちはフエに2年住んで、それからサイゴンに引っ越しました。（終わったこと → 過去形）

• I'm staying with my cousin for a week.

  1週間いとこの家に泊まっています。

• 現在完了形の否定文で：I haven't seen her for years。アメリカ英語では in もよく使います：I haven't seen her in years。
• for + 期間（for two hours）と during + 出来事・時期（during the film、during the summer）は違います。during はどのくらいの間ではなくいつかを表します。
• for ages（くだけた言い方）= とても長い間：I haven't been to the cinema for ages。

Since は起点（ある日、ある年、ある出来事）を示し、動作はそのときから今まで続いています。そのため、主節はふつう完了形（have/has + V3 または have/has been + -ing）になります。

• My dad has worked at the hospital since 2015.

  父は2015年からその病院で働いています。

• I haven't eaten anything since this morning.

  今朝から何も食べていません。

• Binh has played football since he was little.

  ビンは小さいころからサッカーをしています。（since + 過去形の節）

• It's been two years since I last saw Minh.

  最後にミンに会ってから2年になります。

It's been (= It has been) + 期間 + since + 過去形 という形は、話し言葉でとてもよく使います。イギリス英語では同じ意味で It's two years since… とも言います。

Ago は期間の後ろに置き、今からさかのぼって数えます。終わった時点を指すので、現在完了形ではなく過去形と使います。たずねるときは How long ago…? か When…? です。

• Hung moved to Hanoi three years ago.

  フンは3年前にハノイに引っ越しました。

• How long ago did you start this job? — About six months ago.

  この仕事を始めたのはどのくらい前ですか？ — 半年くらい前です。

• I called her ten minutes ago, but she didn't answer.

  10分前に彼女に電話しましたが、出ませんでした。

💡Ago は今からさかのぼり、before は過去のある時点からさかのぼります：She left Hanoi in 2020. She had moved there two years before（= 2018年に）。before だけなら「以前に」という意味です：I've never been here before。

時制を選ぶときは、それが今も続いているのか、終わったのかを考えましょう。

同じ情報を、ある形から別の形に言い換えることができます：

• I bought this bike two years ago. → I've had it for two years.

  この自転車は2年前に買いました。→ 2年間持っています。（bought → have had。have bought ではない）

• Minh started learning the guitar in 2023. → He's been learning it since 2023.

  ミンは2023年にギターを習い始めました。→ 2023年からギターを習っています。

• The last time I saw Hoa was in May. → I haven't seen Hoa since May.

  最後にホアに会ったのは5月でした。→ 5月からホアに会っていません。

• ✗I have studied English since five years.

  ✓I have studied English for five years.

  five years は期間 → for。

• ✗I have lived here for 2019.

  ✓I have lived here since 2019.

  2019 は起点 → since。

• ✗We met each other before two years.

  ✓We met each other two years ago.

  「今から〜前」= 期間 + ago。

• ✗I have seen that film two weeks ago.

  ✓I saw that film two weeks ago.

  ago は終わった時を指す → 過去形。

• ✗I live here since 2020.

  ✓I have lived here since 2020.

  since があるときは、主節を完了形にします。

• ✗I'm waiting for an hour!

  ✓I've been waiting for an hour!

  今までどのくらいかを言うときは、現在進行形ではなく完了形を使います。
