for + süre, since + başlangıç noktası, zaman + ago — ne kadar süre, ne zamandan beri, ne kadar önce
1.Üç sözcük, zamanı ölçmenin üç yolu
For, since ve ago üçü de zamandan söz eder, ama üç farklı şekilde:

Örnek: bugün perşembe ve Lan pazartesi günü Hanoi'ye geldi. Aynı şeyi üç şekilde söyleyebilirsin:
Lan has been in Hanoi for three days.
Lan üç gündür Hanoi'de.
Lan has been in Hanoi since Monday.
Lan pazartesiden beri Hanoi'de.
Lan arrived in Hanoi three days ago.
Lan üç gün önce Hanoi'ye geldi.
İki yaygın tuzak: “2019'da başladı ve hâlâ sürüyor” since 2019 olur — from'dan sonra genellikle to/until gerekir (from 2019 to 2022); “şimdiden iki yıl önce” two years ago olur, before two years değil.
2.For + bir süre
For, How long? sorusunu yanıtlar ve yalnızca Present Perfect ile değil, her zamanla kullanılır.
I've had this phone for three years.
Bu telefon üç yıldır bende. (hâlâ bende)
We lived in Hue for two years, and then we moved to Saigon.
İki yıl Hue'de yaşadık, sonra Saigon'a taşındık. (bitti → Simple Past)
I'm staying with my cousin for a week.
Bir haftalığına kuzenimde kalıyorum.
- Present Perfect olumsuz cümlelerde: I haven't seen her for years. Amerikan İngilizcesinde çoğu zaman in de kullanılır: I haven't seen her in years.
- for + bir süre (for two hours), during + bir olay ya da dönem (during the film, during the summer) ile aynı şey değildir: during ne zaman olduğunu söyler, ne kadar sürdüğünü değil.
- for ages (gündelik dil) = çok uzun zamandır: I haven't been to the cinema for ages.
3.Since + bir başlangıç noktası
Since başlangıç noktasını verir — bir gün, bir yıl, bir olay — ve eylem o zamandan şimdiye kadar sürer. Bu yüzden ana cümle genellikle bir perfect zamandadır (have/has + V3 ya da have/has been + -ing).
My dad has worked at the hospital since 2015.
Babam 2015'ten beri hastanede çalışıyor.
I haven't eaten anything since this morning.
Bu sabahtan beri hiçbir şey yemedim.
Binh has played football since he was little.
Binh küçüklüğünden beri futbol oynuyor. (since + Simple Past'ta bir yan cümle)
It's been two years since I last saw Minh.
Minh'i son görüşümün üzerinden iki yıl geçti.
It's been (= It has been) + bir süre + since + Simple Past kalıbı konuşmada çok yaygındır. İngiliz İngilizcesinde aynı anlamda It's two years since… de denir.
4.Ago — şimdiden önce
Ago, sürenin arkasına gelir ve şimdiden geriye doğru sayar. Bitmiş bir anı gösterdiği için Present Perfect ile değil Simple Past ile kullanılır. Sormak için: How long ago…? ya da When…?
Hung moved to Hanoi three years ago.
Hung üç yıl önce Hanoi'ye taşındı.
How long ago did you start this job? — About six months ago.
Bu işe ne kadar zaman önce başladın? — Yaklaşık altı ay önce.
I called her ten minutes ago, but she didn't answer.
Onu on dakika önce aradım ama açmadı.
Ago şimdiden geriye sayar; before ise geçmişteki bir andan geriye sayar: She left Hanoi in 2020. She had moved there two years before (= 2018'de). Tek başına before “daha önce” demektir: I've never been here before.
5.Sormak: How long…? ve When…?
Zamanı seçmek için kendine sor: bu hâlâ sürüyor mu, yoksa bitti mi?

Aynı bilgiyi bir kalıptan diğerine çevirebilirsin:
I bought this bike two years ago. → I've had it for two years.
Bu bisikleti iki yıl önce aldım. → İki yıldır bende. (bought → have had olur, have bought değil)
Minh started learning the guitar in 2023. → He's been learning it since 2023.
Minh 2023'te gitar öğrenmeye başladı. → 2023'ten beri öğreniyor.
The last time I saw Hoa was in May. → I haven't seen Hoa since May.
Hoa'yı son gördüğümde mayıstı. → Mayıstan beri Hoa'yı görmedim.
6.Sık yapılan hatalar
I have studied English since five years.I have studied English for five years.
five years bir süredir → for.
I have lived here for 2019.I have lived here since 2019.
2019 bir başlangıç noktasıdır → since.
We met each other before two years.We met each other two years ago.
“Şimdiden geriye” = bir süre + ago.
I have seen that film two weeks ago.I saw that film two weeks ago.
ago bitmiş bir zamanı gösterir → Simple Past.
I live here since 2020.I have lived here since 2020.
since, ana cümlede bir perfect zaman ister.
I'm waiting for an hour!I've been waiting for an hour!
Şimdiye kadar ne kadar sürdüğünü söylemek için Present Continuous değil, bir perfect zaman kullan.
