Quite / pretty / rather / fairly
quite good, pretty easy, rather cold, fairly sure — very より弱い程度
|---|---|---|
| fairly | いちばん弱い:まあまあ、もっとよくてもいい | The room is fairly big. |
アメリカ英語では very に近いことが多い | The film was quite good. |
| pretty | quite に近い — くだけた言い方で、主に話し言葉 | The test was pretty easy. |
Hue is quite quiet at night.

2.quite
The story is quite interesting.
We see each other quite often.
You're quite right — we should leave now.
Life in the city is quite different from life in my village.
I'm not quite ready. Give me five minutes.
Sorry, I don't quite understand the question.
3.a / an との位置関係
a/an + 形容詞 + 名詞の形では、quite はふつう a/an の前に、pretty と fairly は a/an の後ろに置きます。
|---|---|---|
| quite | quite + a/an + 形容詞 + 名詞 | It's quite a long walk. |
| pretty | a/an + pretty + 形容詞 + 名詞 | We stayed in a pretty nice hotel. |
| fairly | a/an + fairly + 形容詞 + 名詞 | It's a fairly small room. |
| rather | a rather + 形容詞 + 名詞 / rather a + 形容詞 + 名詞 | It was a rather long day. / It was rather a long day. |
It was quite a surprise.
- quite a lot (of) と quite a few = かなりの数・量:There were quite a few people at the party.
- quite + like / enjoy = 好きだけれど、とても好きというほどではない(イギリス英語):I quite like jazz, but it's not my favourite.
I quite agree — it's too expensive.
比較級や too と直接一緒に使えるのは rather だけです(quite、pretty、fairly は使えません):rather better、rather more expensive、rather too fast。比較級には a bit / much / a lot も使えます — レッスン「比較級 + much / a bit / far」を見てください。
I didn't expect much, but the film was rather good.
This laptop is rather faster than my old one.

My English is fairly good, but I still make mistakes.
would rather(= 〜するほうがいい)と混同しないようにしましょう:I'd rather stay home tonight.
