Quite / pretty / rather / fairly
quite good, pretty easy, rather cold, fairly sure — very보다 약한 정도
보통 very보다는 약하고 a little보다는 강합니다.
|---|---|---|
| fairly | 가장 약함: 괜찮지만 더 좋을 수도 있음 | The room is fairly big. |
미국 영어에서는 very에 가까운 경우가 많음 | The film was quite good. |
| pretty | quite와 비슷함 — 비격식, 주로 말할 때 | The test was pretty easy. |
약간 격식체이고 영국식 | It's rather cold today. |
Hue is quite quiet at night.
Our new flat is pretty small, but it's cheap.
I'm fairly sure the shop opens at nine.
The bus was rather slow this morning.
2.quite
1. Quite = 꽤(fairly) — 보통의 형용사(good, big, interesting, often…)
The story is quite interesting.
We see each other quite often.
2. Quite = 완전히(completely) — sure, right, true, clear, different, certain, impossible, amazing 같은 “절대적인” 형용사와 함께 씁니다.
You're quite right — we should leave now.
Life in the city is quite different from life in my village.
I'm not quite ready. Give me five minutes.
Sorry, I don't quite understand the question.
3.a / an과 함께 쓸 때의 위치
a/an + 형용사 + 명사와 함께 쓸 때 quite는 보통 a/an 앞에, pretty와 fairly는 a/an 뒤에 옵니다.
|---|---|---|
| quite | quite + a/an + adjective + noun | It's quite a long walk. |
| pretty | a/an + pretty + adjective + noun | We stayed in a pretty nice hotel. |
| fairly | a/an + fairly + adjective + noun | It's a fairly small room. |
| rather | a rather + adjective + noun / rather a + adjective + noun | It was a rather long day. / It was rather a long day. |
Quite(pretty
It was quite a surprise.
- quite a lot (of)와 quite a few = 꽤 많은 수나 양: There were quite a few people at the party.
- quite + like / enjoy = 좋아하긴 하지만 아주 좋아하지는 않음(영국 영어): I quite like jazz, but it's not my favourite.
I quite agree — it's too expensive.
4.Rather와 fairly
비교급이나 too와 바로 함께 쓸 수 있는 것은 rather뿐입니다(quite, pretty, fairly는 안 됨): rather better, rather more expensive, rather too fast. 비교급과는 a bit / much / a lot도 쓸 수 있습니다 — 「비교급 + much / a bit / far」 레슨 참고.
I didn't expect much, but the film was rather good.
This laptop is rather faster than my old one.
The taxi driver was going rather too fast.
My English is fairly good, but I still make mistakes.
would rather(= ~하는 편이 낫다, 차라리 ~하겠다)와 헷갈리지 마세요: I'd rather stay home tonight.
