Quite / pretty / rather / fairly
quite good, pretty easy, rather cold, fairly sure — น้อยกว่า very
Quite, pretty, rather, fairly วางหน้าคำคุณศัพท์หรือคำกริยาวิเศษณ์ หมายถึง “ในระดับหนึ่ง” — มักน้อยกว่า very แต่มากกว่า a little แต่ละคำให้ความรู้สึกต่างกัน:
|---|---|---|
| fairly | อ่อนที่สุด: พอใช้ได้ แต่ดีกว่านี้ได้ | The room is fairly big. |
| quite | ค่อนข้างมาก (อังกฤษแบบบริติช); ในอังกฤษแบบอเมริกันมักใกล้เคียง very | The film was quite good. |
| pretty | ใกล้เคียง quite — ไม่เป็นทางการ ใช้ในภาษาพูดเป็นหลัก | The test was pretty easy. |
Hue is quite quiet at night.
Our new flat is pretty small, but it's cheap.
I'm fairly sure the shop opens at nine.
The bus was rather slow this morning.
The story is quite interesting.
We see each other quite often.
You're quite right — we should leave now.
Life in the city is quite different from life in my village.
Not quite = ไม่ทั้งหมด ไม่เชิง “I don't quite understand” เป็นวิธีบอกอย่างสุภาพว่าคุณยังไม่เข้าใจ
I'm not quite ready. Give me five minutes.
Sorry, I don't quite understand the question.
3.ตำแหน่งเมื่อมี a / an
ในรูป a/an + คำคุณศัพท์ + คำนาม คำว่า quite มักวางหน้า a/an ส่วน pretty และ fairly วางหลัง a/an ส่วน rather วางได้ทั้งสองตำแหน่ง
|---|---|---|
| quite | quite + a/an + คำคุณศัพท์ + คำนาม | It's quite a long walk. |
| pretty | a/an + pretty + คำคุณศัพท์ + คำนาม | We stayed in a pretty nice hotel. |
| fairly | a/an + fairly + คำคุณศัพท์ + คำนาม | It's a fairly small room. |
| rather | a rather + คำคุณศัพท์ + คำนาม / rather a + คำคุณศัพท์ + คำนาม | It was a rather long day. / It was rather a long day. |
It was quite a surprise
- quite a lot (of) และ quite a few = จำนวนหรือปริมาณค่อนข้างมาก: There were quite a few people at the party
- quite + like / enjoy = ชอบ แต่ไม่ถึงกับชอบมาก (อังกฤษแบบบริติช): I quite like jazz, but it's not my favourite
I quite agree — it's too expensive
มีแค่ rather (ไม่ใช่ quite, pretty หรือ fairly) ที่ใช้กับขั้นกว่าหรือ too ได้โดยตรง: rather better, rather more expensive, rather too fast กับขั้นกว่ายังใช้ a bit / much / a lot ได้ด้วย — ดูบทเรียน “ขั้นกว่า + much / a bit / far”
I didn't expect much, but the film was rather good.
This laptop is rather faster than my old one.
The taxi driver was going rather too fast.
My English is fairly good, but I still make mistakes.
มากกว่า): I'd rather stay home tonight (คืนนี้ฉันอยากอยู่บ้านมากกว่า) นั่นเป็นอีกโครงสร้างหนึ่ง — ดูบทเรียน “‘Would rather’ / ‘had better’”
