Lição 92 · Etapa 8: Adjetivos, advérbios e preposições

Quite / pretty / rather / fairly

Intermédio

Forma e uso

quite good, pretty easy, rather cold, fairly sure — menos que very

quiterazoavelmente forte (inglês britânico); no inglês americano muitas vezes perto de veryThe film was quite good.
  • Hue is quite quiet at night.

Hue é bem tranquila à noite.

  • Our new flat is pretty small, but it's cheap.

Nosso apartamento novo é bem pequeno, mas é barato.

  • I'm fairly sure the shop opens at nine.

  • The bus was rather slow this morning.

No inglês americano, quite costuma soar forte, perto de very.

  • The story is quite interesting.

A história é bem interessante. (BrE: razoavelmente interessante; AmE: muito interessante)

  • We see each other quite often.

A gente se vê com bastante frequência.

2. Quite = completamente — com adjetivos “absolutos” como sure, right, true, clear, different, certain, impossible, amazing. Esse sentido é igual no inglês britânico e no americano.

  • You're quite right — we should leave now.

Você tem toda a razão — a gente deveria ir agora.

  • Life in the city is quite different from life in my village.

Not quite = não completamente.

  • I'm not quite ready. Give me five minutes.

Ainda não estou totalmente pronto. Me dá cinco minutos.

  • Sorry, I don't quite understand the question.

Desculpe, não entendi bem a pergunta.

3.Posição com a / an

Com a/an + adjetivo + substantivo, quite normalmente vem antes de a/an, enquanto pretty e fairly vêm depois. Rather pode ficar nos dois lugares.

PalavraPosiçãoExemplo
quitequite + a/an + adjetivo + substantivoIt's quite a long walk.
prettya/an + pretty + adjetivo + substantivoWe stayed in a pretty nice hotel.
fairlya/an + fairly + adjetivo + substantivoIt's a fairly small room.
rathera rather + adjetivo + substantivo / rather a + adjetivo + substantivoIt was a rather long day. / It was rather a long day.

  • quite a lot (of) e quite a few = um número ou uma quantidade bem grande: There were quite a few people at the party.
I quite like jazz, but it's not my favourite.
  • quite + agree = concordar completamente: I quite agree — it's too expensive.

4.Rather e fairly

  • I didn't expect much, but the film was rather good.

  • This laptop is rather faster than my old one.

  • The taxi driver was going rather too fast.

  • My English is fairly good, but I still make mistakes.

Meu inglês é razoável, mas ainda cometo erros.

Não confunda com would rather (= preferir): I'd rather stay home tonight. É outra estrutura — veja a lição “Would rather / had better”.

5.Erros comuns

  • It was pretty a good film.

It was a pretty good film.

    pretty vem depois de a/an.

  • We live in a quite old house.

We live in quite an old house.

quite normalmente vem antes de a/an.

  • Today is fairly hotter than yesterday.

Today is rather hotter than yesterday. / Today is a bit hotter than yesterday.
