単数と複数

左右対になった2つの部分からできている物は、物が1つしかなくても複数名詞と複数の動詞を使います：trousers, jeans, shorts, pyjamas, glasses, sunglasses, scissors, headphones。数えるときは a pair of / two pairs of を使います。

• These jeans are too tight.

  このジーンズはきつすぎます。（is ではない）

• Where are my glasses? I can't find them.

  眼鏡はどこ？見つからない。

• I bought a pair of shorts and two pairs of socks.

  短パンを1枚と靴下を2足買いました。

• This pair of scissors is really sharp.

  このはさみは本当によく切れます。（主語は pair → is）

💡日本語では「ジーンズ1本」「眼鏡1つ」のように1つの物として数えるので、a jeans や my glasses is と書いてしまいがちです。英語ではこれらの語に単数形はありません — a pair of か some を使います：I need some new glasses / a new pair of glasses.

• news は不可算名詞です：The news is good. 1つのニュースは a piece of news（a news ではない）。
• -ics で終わる科目や分野：maths（アメリカ英語：math）, physics, economics, politics, athletics, gymnastics → 動詞は単数：Physics is hard.（politics が「その人の政治的な考え」という意味のときは、複数扱いになることもあります。）
• means, series, species は単数も複数も同じ形です：a TV series → two TV series、a means of transport → many means of transport。

• The news is on at seven.

  ニュースは7時から放送されます。

• I have some good news for you.

  あなたにいい知らせがあります。（a good news ではない）

• Economics is my favourite subject.

  経済学は私の好きな科目です。

• This drama series is very popular in Vietnam.

  このドラマシリーズはベトナムでとても人気があります。

family, team, staff, government, company, class, audience, committee は人の集まりです。イギリス英語では、動詞は単数（グループを1つのまとまりとして見る）でも複数（メンバー一人ひとりとして見る）でもかまいません。アメリカ英語ではふつう単数を使います。

police と people はいつも複数の動詞をとります。1人のときは a police officer、a person です（a police ではない）。person のふつうの複数形は people で、persons は改まった文（掲示、法律）でしか使いません。

• The team is / are training hard for the final.

  チームは決勝に向けて一生懸命練習しています。（イギリス英語：どちらも可、アメリカ英語：is）

• The police are looking for the driver.

  警察はその運転手を探しています。（is ではない）

• Her brother is a police officer.

  彼女のお兄さんは警察官です。

• There were a lot of people at the market.

  市場には人がたくさんいました。

💡単数か複数かを決めたら、文の中で統一しましょう：The team is happy with its result / The team are happy with their result.

金額、期間、距離をひとまとまりの量として考えるときは、名詞に -s がついていても動詞は単数にします。

• Two hundred dollars is a lot for a pair of shoes.

  靴1足に200ドルは高すぎます。（are ではない）

• Three years is a long time to wait.

  3年は待つには長い時間です。

• Five kilometres isn't far. Let's walk.

  5キロなら遠くないよ。歩こう。

でも、1つずつ単位が過ぎていくことを考えるなら、複数の動詞も自然です：Ten years have passed since we left school.

• ✗My new jeans is too long.

  ✓My new jeans are too long.

  jeans は複数名詞です。

• ✗I need a new trouser.

  ✓I need new trousers / a new pair of trousers.

  単数形はありません。a pair of を使います。

• ✗The news are very bad today.

  ✓The news is very bad today.

  news は不可算名詞です。

• ✗The police is coming.

  ✓The police are coming.

  police はいつも複数の動詞をとります。

• ✗There were many persons at the party.

  ✓There were many people at the party.

  person のふつうの複数形は people です。

• ✗Physics are difficult.

  ✓Physics is difficult.

  -ics で終わる科目 → 単数。
