เอกพจน์และพหูพจน์

สิ่งของที่ประกอบด้วยสองข้างที่เหมือนกัน ใช้คำนามพหูพจน์และกริยาพหูพจน์ แม้จะมีแค่ชิ้นเดียว: trousers, jeans, shorts, pyjamas, glasses, sunglasses, scissors, headphones ถ้าจะนับ ให้ใช้ a pair of / two pairs of

• These jeans are too tight.

  กางเกงยีนส์ตัวนี้คับเกินไป (ไม่ใช่: is)

• Where are my glasses? I can't find them.

  แว่นตาของฉันอยู่ไหน หาไม่เจอเลย

• I bought a pair of shorts and two pairs of socks.

  ฉันซื้อกางเกงขาสั้นหนึ่งตัวกับถุงเท้าสองคู่

• This pair of scissors is really sharp.

  กรรไกรเล่มนี้คมมาก (ประธานคือ pair → is)

💡ภาษาไทยมองสิ่งเหล่านี้เป็นของชิ้นเดียว (กางเกงหนึ่งตัว แว่นตาหนึ่งอัน) ผู้เรียนจึงมักเขียนว่า a jeans หรือ my glasses is ในภาษาอังกฤษ คำเหล่านี้ไม่มีรูปเอกพจน์ — ให้ใช้ a pair of หรือ some: I need some new glasses / a new pair of glasses.

• news เป็นคำนามนับไม่ได้: The news is good. ข่าวหนึ่งเรื่องคือ a piece of news (ไม่ใช่: a news)
• วิชาและสาขาที่ลงท้ายด้วย -ics: maths (AmE: math), physics, economics, politics, athletics, gymnastics → กริยาเอกพจน์: Physics is hard. (ถ้า politics หมายถึง “ความคิดเห็นทางการเมืองของใครสักคน” ใช้พหูพจน์ได้)
• means, series, species มีรูปเดียวกันทั้งเอกพจน์และพหูพจน์: a TV series → two TV series; a means of transport → many means of transport

• The news is on at seven.

  ข่าวออกอากาศตอนหนึ่งทุ่ม

• I have some good news for you.

  ฉันมีข่าวดีจะบอกคุณ (ไม่ใช่: a good news)

• Economics is my favourite subject.

  เศรษฐศาสตร์เป็นวิชาที่ฉันชอบที่สุด

• This drama series is very popular in Vietnam.

  ซีรีส์เรื่องนี้ดังมากในเวียดนาม

family, team, staff, government, company, class, audience, committee เป็นกลุ่มของคน ในอังกฤษแบบบริติช กริยาเป็นเอกพจน์ได้ (มองกลุ่มเป็นหน่วยเดียว) หรือพหูพจน์ก็ได้ (มองสมาชิกแต่ละคน) ส่วนอังกฤษแบบอเมริกันมักใช้เอกพจน์

police และ people ใช้กริยาพหูพจน์เสมอ ถ้าหมายถึงคนเดียว ให้พูดว่า a police officer, a person (ไม่ใช่: a police) พหูพจน์ปกติของ person คือ people ส่วน persons พบแค่ในข้อความทางการ (ป้าย กฎหมาย)

• The team is / are training hard for the final.

  ทีมกำลังซ้อมหนักเพื่อนัดชิงชนะเลิศ (BrE: ได้ทั้งสองแบบ; AmE: is)

• The police are looking for the driver.

  ตำรวจกำลังตามหาคนขับ (ไม่ใช่: is)

• Her brother is a police officer.

  พี่ชายของเธอเป็นตำรวจ

• There were a lot of people at the market.

  ที่ตลาดมีคนเยอะมาก

💡เมื่อเลือกเอกพจน์หรือพหูพจน์แล้ว ต้องใช้ให้ตรงกันทั้งประโยค: The team is happy with its result / The team are happy with their result.

เมื่อมองจำนวนเงิน ช่วงเวลา หรือระยะทางเป็นจำนวนรวมก้อนเดียว ให้ใช้กริยาเอกพจน์ แม้คำนามจะมี -s

• Two hundred dollars is a lot for a pair of shoes.

  สองร้อยดอลลาร์สำหรับรองเท้าคู่เดียวถือว่าแพงมาก (ไม่ใช่: are)

• Three years is a long time to wait.

  สามปีเป็นเวลาที่นานมากสำหรับการรอ

• Five kilometres isn't far. Let's walk.

  ห้ากิโลเมตรไม่ไกลหรอก เดินไปกันเถอะ

แต่ถ้านึกถึงแต่ละหน่วยที่ผ่านไปทีละหน่วย ใช้กริยาพหูพจน์ก็ยังเป็นธรรมชาติ: Ten years have passed since we left school.

• ✗My new jeans is too long.

  ✓My new jeans are too long.

  jeans เป็นคำนามพหูพจน์

• ✗I need a new trouser.

  ✓I need new trousers / a new pair of trousers.

  ไม่มีรูปเอกพจน์ ให้ใช้ a pair of

• ✗The news are very bad today.

  ✓The news is very bad today.

  news เป็นคำนามนับไม่ได้

• ✗The police is coming.

  ✓The police are coming.

  police ใช้กริยาพหูพจน์เสมอ

• ✗There were many persons at the party.

  ✓There were many people at the party.

  พหูพจน์ปกติของ person คือ people

• ✗Physics are difficult.

  ✓Physics is difficult.

  วิชาที่ลงท้ายด้วย -ics → เอกพจน์
