Singular and plural
the police are, a pair of jeans, the news is, two hundred dollars is — أسماء بعدد غير متوقع
ولعدّها استخدم a pair of / two pairs of.
These jeans are too tight.

Where are my glasses? I can't find them.
I bought a pair of shorts and two pairs of socks.

This pair of scissors is really sharp.
(الفاعل هو pair → is)
في العربية نقول «بنطال» و«نظارة» و«مقص» بصيغة المفرد، لذلك يكتب المتعلمون كثيرًا a jeans أو my glasses is. أما في الإنجليزية فليس لهذه الكلمات صيغة مفرد — استخدم a pair of أو some: I need some new glasses / a new pair of glasses.
- news اسم غير معدود: The news is good. وللخبر الواحد: a piece of news (وليس: a news).
- المواد والمجالات المنتهية بـ -ics: maths (AmE: math), physics, economics, politics, athletics, gymnastics → فعل مفرد: Physics is hard.
- means, series, species لها الصيغة نفسها في المفرد والجمع: a TV series → two TV series؛ a means of transport → many means of transport.
The news is on at seven.
I have some good news for you.
(وليس: a good news)

|---|---|---|
The team is / are… | The team is… |
Vietnam are / is playing Thailand. | Vietnam is playing Thailand. |
| police | The police are… | The police are… |
| people | People are… | People are… |
وللشخص الواحد: a police officer، a person (وليس: a police).

The team is happy with its result / The team are happy with their result.

(وليس: are)
