1.दो हिस्सों वाली चीज़ें: हमेशा बहुवचन
दो एक जैसे हिस्सों से बनी चीज़ों के लिए बहुवचन संज्ञा और बहुवचन क्रिया आती है, भले ही चीज़ एक ही हो: trousers, jeans, shorts, pyjamas, glasses, sunglasses, scissors, headphones। इन्हें गिनने के लिए a pair of / two pairs of का प्रयोग करें।
These jeans are too tight.
ये जींस बहुत टाइट है। (is नहीं)
Where are my glasses? I can't find them.
मेरा चश्मा कहाँ है? मुझे वह मिल नहीं रहा।
I bought a pair of shorts and two pairs of socks.
मैंने एक शॉर्ट्स और दो जोड़ी मोज़े खरीदे।
This pair of scissors is really sharp.
यह कैंची सच में बहुत तेज़ है। (कर्ता pair है → is)
हिंदी में हम “मेरा चश्मा”, “एक जींस” कहते हैं, यानी इन्हें एक ही चीज़ मानते हैं, इसलिए सीखने वाले अक्सर a jeans या my glasses is लिख देते हैं। English में इन शब्दों का कोई एकवचन रूप नहीं होता — a pair of या some का प्रयोग करें: I need some new glasses / a new pair of glasses।
2.-s पर खत्म, लेकिन एकवचन
- news अगणनीय है: The news is good. एक ख़बर: a piece of news (a news नहीं)।
- -ics पर खत्म होने वाले विषय और क्षेत्र: maths (AmE: math), physics, economics, politics, athletics, gymnastics → एकवचन क्रिया: Physics is hard. (जब politics का मतलब “किसी के राजनीतिक विचार” हो, तब यह बहुवचन हो सकता है।)
- means, series, species का एकवचन और बहुवचन रूप एक जैसा होता है: a TV series → two TV series; a means of transport → many means of transport।
The news is on at seven.
समाचार सात बजे आते हैं।
I have some good news for you.
मेरे पास आपके लिए एक अच्छी ख़बर है। (a good news नहीं)
Economics is my favourite subject.
अर्थशास्त्र मेरा पसंदीदा विषय है।
This drama series is very popular in Vietnam.
यह ड्रामा सीरीज़ वियतनाम में बहुत लोकप्रिय है।
3.समूहवाचक संज्ञाएँ
family, team, staff, government, company, class, audience, committee लोगों के समूह हैं। British English में क्रिया एकवचन (समूह को एक इकाई मानकर) या बहुवचन (सदस्यों को अलग-अलग व्यक्ति मानकर) हो सकती है। American English में आमतौर पर एकवचन आता है।

police और people के साथ हमेशा बहुवचन क्रिया आती है। एक व्यक्ति के लिए: a police officer, a person (a police नहीं)। person का सामान्य बहुवचन people है; persons सिर्फ़ औपचारिक लेखन (बोर्ड, क़ानून) में दिखता है।
The team is / are training hard for the final.
टीम फ़ाइनल के लिए कड़ी मेहनत से अभ्यास कर रही है। (BrE: दोनों; AmE: is)
The police are looking for the driver.
पुलिस ड्राइवर को ढूँढ रही है। (is नहीं)
Her brother is a police officer.
उसका भाई पुलिस अधिकारी है।
There were a lot of people at the market.
बाज़ार में बहुत सारे लोग थे।
एक बार एकवचन या बहुवचन चुन लिया, तो पूरे वाक्य में वही रखें: The team is happy with its result / The team are happy with their result।
4.पैसा, समय, दूरी: एक ही मात्रा
जब आप कोई रकम, कोई समय-अवधि या कोई दूरी एक मात्रा के रूप में सोचते हैं, तो एकवचन क्रिया का प्रयोग करें, भले ही संज्ञा में -s हो।
Two hundred dollars is a lot for a pair of shoes.
जूतों की एक जोड़ी के लिए दो सौ डॉलर बहुत ज़्यादा हैं। (are नहीं)
Three years is a long time to wait.
तीन साल इंतज़ार करने के लिए बहुत लंबा समय है।
Five kilometres isn't far. Let's walk.
पाँच किलोमीटर दूर नहीं है। चलो पैदल चलते हैं।
लेकिन अगर आप एक-एक करके बीतती इकाइयों के बारे में सोचते हैं, तो बहुवचन क्रिया भी स्वाभाविक है: Ten years have passed since we left school।
5.आम गलतियाँ
My new jeans is too long.My new jeans are too long.
jeans बहुवचन संज्ञा है।
I need a new trouser.I need new trousers / a new pair of trousers.
एकवचन रूप नहीं होता; a pair of का प्रयोग करें।
The news are very bad today.The news is very bad today.
news अगणनीय है।
The police is coming.The police are coming.
police के साथ हमेशा बहुवचन क्रिया आती है।
There were many persons at the party.There were many people at the party.
person का सामान्य बहुवचन people है।
Physics are difficult.Physics is difficult.
-ics पर खत्म होने वाला विषय → एकवचन।
