เงื่อนไขแบบที่ 3: if + had + กริยาช่อง 3 (Past Perfect), would have + กริยาช่อง 3 ใช้จินตนาการว่าอดีตจะออกมาแตกต่างไป — ทั้งเงื่อนไขและผลล้วนไม่จริง เพราะเรื่องนั้นเกิดขึ้นไปแล้ว

รูปย่อ: If I'd known (had), I'd have come (would), I would've come เวลาพูดเร็ว would have ฟังดูเกือบเหมือน “would-ə”

💡'd ในอนุประโยค if คือ had (If I'd known) ส่วนในประโยคผลคือ would (I'd have gone) และเพราะ would've ฟังดูเหมือน “would of” หลายคนจึงสะกดผิด — เวลาเขียนให้เขียน would have เสมอ

1. จินตนาการอดีตที่ต่างออกไป — สิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นจริงเป็นตรงกันข้าม

• If I had left earlier, I wouldn't have missed the train.

  ถ้าฉันออกจากบ้านเร็วกว่านี้ ฉันคงไม่ตกรถไฟ (ฉันออกสายและตกรถไฟ)

• If Lan hadn't helped me, I would have failed the course.

  ถ้าลานไม่ได้ช่วยฉัน ฉันคงสอบตกวิชานี้ไปแล้ว (แต่ลานช่วยฉันจริง ๆ)

2. เสียดายหรือตำหนิเรื่องในอดีต

• If you'd told me it was your birthday, I'd have bought you a cake.

  ถ้าคุณบอกฉันว่าวันนั้นเป็นวันเกิดคุณ ฉันคงซื้อเค้กให้คุณแล้ว

• We would have won if we hadn't made so many mistakes.

  ถ้าเราไม่พลาดเยอะขนาดนั้น เราคงชนะไปแล้ว

3. โล่งใจที่เรื่องร้ายไม่ได้เกิดขึ้น

• If the neighbours hadn't smelled the smoke, the whole house would have burned down.

  ถ้าเพื่อนบ้านไม่ได้กลิ่นควัน บ้านทั้งหลังคงถูกไฟไหม้หมดแล้ว

• If you hadn't reminded me, I would have forgotten my passport.

  ถ้าคุณไม่เตือน ฉันคงลืมหนังสือเดินทางไปแล้ว

ในประโยคผลใช้ could have + V3 (= would have been able to คงจะทำได้) หรือ might have + V3 (= would perhaps have อาจจะ) แทน would ได้

• If we'd booked earlier, we could have sat together.

  ถ้าเราจองเร็วกว่านี้ เราคงได้นั่งด้วยกัน (could have = would have been able to คงจะทำได้)

• If she had applied, she might have won the scholarship.

  ถ้าเธอสมัครไป เธออาจจะได้ทุนก็ได้ (might have = would perhaps have อาจจะ)

ดูให้ออกว่าแต่ละอนุประโยคพูดถึงเวลาไหน อนุประโยคที่พูดถึงอดีต → had V3 / would have V3 อนุประโยคที่พูดถึงตอนนี้ → Past Simple / would + กริยา ถ้าสองอนุประโยคพูดถึงคนละเวลา จะได้เงื่อนไขแบบผสม (mixed conditional)

• If I had studied medicine, I would be a doctor now.

  ถ้าตอนนั้นฉันเรียนแพทย์ ตอนนี้ฉันคงเป็นหมอไปแล้ว (อดีต → ปัจจุบัน)

• If we hadn't moved to Da Nang, we wouldn't know each other.

  ถ้าเราไม่ได้ย้ายไปดานัง เราคงไม่ได้รู้จักกัน (อดีต → ปัจจุบัน)

• If he were more organised, he wouldn't have forgotten the meeting.

  ถ้าเขาเป็นคนมีระเบียบกว่านี้ เขาคงไม่ลืมการประชุม (ปัจจุบัน → อดีต)

• If I didn't have to work tomorrow, I would have stayed at the party longer.

  ถ้าพรุ่งนี้ฉันไม่ต้องทำงาน ฉันคงอยู่ที่ปาร์ตี้นานกว่านี้ (ปัจจุบัน → อดีต)

💡แบบผสม 1 มักมี now, today, still ในประโยคผล ถ้าเห็น “now” และอนุประโยค if ใช้ had V3 ประโยคผลจะใช้ would + กริยา ไม่ใช่ would have

ในภาษาอังกฤษแบบทางการ ตัด if ออกแล้วย้าย had ไปไว้หน้าประธานได้: Had I known = If I had known รูปปฏิเสธคือ Had … not + V3 (ไม่ย่อเป็น Hadn't I…) ดูบทเรียน “การสลับตำแหน่ง (inversion)”

• Had we known the road was closed, we would have gone another way.

  หากเรารู้ว่าถนนปิด เราคงไปอีกทางหนึ่งแล้ว

• Had she not called, I would have waited all night.

  หากเธอไม่ได้โทรมา ฉันคงรอทั้งคืน (ไม่ใช่: Hadn't she called)

• ✗If I would have known, I would have come.

  ✓If I had known, I would have come.

  อนุประโยค if ใช้ had + V3 “If I would have…” อาจได้ยินในภาษาพูดแบบสบาย ๆ แต่ไม่ใช่รูปมาตรฐาน

• ✗If I knew you were in hospital, I would have visited you.

  ✓If I had known you were in hospital, I would have visited you.

  พูดถึงอดีต → had known

• ✗We were late. If we had taken a taxi, we would arrive on time.

  ✓We were late. If we had taken a taxi, we would have arrived on time.

  ผลก็อยู่ในอดีตเหมือนกัน → would have + V3

• ✗If she had took the medicine, she would have felt better.

  ✓If she had taken the medicine, she would have felt better.

  had + กริยาช่อง 3 (taken) ไม่ใช่ Past Simple

• ✗If she had asked me, I would of helped her.

  ✓If she had asked me, I would have helped her.

  would've ฟังดูเหมือน “would of” แต่ต้องเป็น have เสมอ

• ✗If it had not rained, we would have play tennis.

  ✓If it had not rained, we would have played tennis.
