1
a company that's truly purpose -driven, the decisions that they make will be consistent with that purpose.
2
I'll give you an example.
3
There's a big chain of pharmacies, chemists in the U .S called CVS.
4
A lot of you probably know it.
5
And they would have meetings with doctors and hospitals because they have, you know, partnerships.
6
And at some point, at the end of all of these meetings, there was this uncomfortable moment when one of the doctors in the meeting would ask the question,
7
don't you sell cigarettes in your shops and here they have a purpose statement
8
that says we care about the health of our customers that's why we're in business
9
and so they went back to the drawing board
10
and they said you know
11
if we really care about our purpose we should remove cigarettes from our shops
12
and they did they pulled cigarettes
13
and they this was billions of dollars worth of revenues not millions billions they literally just axed them
14
and wall street went nuts how can you do this?
15
All that business is going to go somewhere else, etc., etc. Turned out the business didn't go other places.
16
What ended up happening was the customers were grateful
17
and they bought more of other things and they chose to go to CVS.
18
Yes, their stock plummeted for a short period only because Wall Street punished them.
19
It came back and as important as the customers' liking favor,
20
the employees were really proud to work for a company that actually said, did what it said.
21
Now you look at their competition, you know, Walgreens and Boots, they have the same purpose statement, and yet they didn't make the same decision.
22
You know, they would, and when questioned by the press, they would say, well, we sell smoking cessation products, you know, which is like selling donuts and diet books right next to each other.
23
You know, one's an instant gratification, the other one requires work, you buy the donut.
24
So you can easily tell when a company truly obeys its purpose if you look at the decisions that they make.
25
They should be consistent.

- “they went back to the drawing board”:字面意思是“回到绘图板”,实际表示“重新考虑”,这种习语的使用让表达更生动,避免了生硬的直译。
- “the business didn't go other places”:没有用复杂的句式,而是用简单的“go other places”来表达“业务没有流失”,简洁又易懂,体现了母语者的表达习惯。
