Lección 76 · Etapa 6: Patrones verbales
Adjetivo + to-infinitivo
IntermedioAdjective + to-infinitive
Forma y uso
it's hard to…, I'm happy to…, nice to meet you — un adjetivo seguido de to
1.Forma
| Estructura | Ejemplo |
|---|---|
| It + be + adjetivo + to + verbo | It's hard to say. |
| It + be + adjetivo + for + persona + to + verbo | It's hard for me to understand him. |
| It + be + adjetivo + of + persona + to + verbo | It's kind of you to come. |
| persona + be + adjetivo + to + verbo | I'm happy to help. |
| cosa + be + adjetivo + to + verbo | This book is easy to read. |
Toda oración inglesa necesita sujeto: It's difficult to learn English (no: Is difficult to learn English).
2.Cómo se usa
1. It's + adjetivo + to + verbo: dar una opinión sobre una acción: easy, hard, difficult, important, necessary, possible, safe, dangerous, nice, great, expensive…
It's important to drink enough water in hot weather.
It isn't easy to find a cheap flat in Hanoi.
It was great to see you last weekend!
2. Decir quién lo hace: for + persona + to + verbo
It's hard for me to understand his accent.
Me cuesta entender su acento.
It's normal for babies to wake up at night.
3. Juzgar el comportamiento de alguien: It's + adjetivo + of + persona + to + verbo: kind, nice, good, generous, thoughtful, silly, careless, rude…
It's very kind of you to help me.
Es muy amable de tu parte ayudarme.
It was silly of me to leave my phone in the taxi.
4. Persona + adjetivo de sentimiento + to + verbo: cómo reacciona alguien ante algo: happy, glad, pleased, sorry, surprised, shocked, relieved, lucky, proud, disappointed…
Nice to meet you.
Encantado de conocerte.
I'm sorry to hear that you're ill.
Siento mucho saber que estás enfermo.
I was surprised to see Hung at the party.
We were lucky to get the last two tickets.
5. Persona + adjetivo de actitud + to + verbo: listo, poco dispuesto, cuidadoso…: ready, willing, happy (= dispuesto), keen, afraid, careful, quick, slow…
I'm ready to go.
Estoy listo para irme.
I'm happy to help if you need anything.
Con gusto te ayudo si necesitas algo.
Be careful not to drop it.
Ten cuidado de no dejarlo caer. (negativa: not to + verbo)
6. Cosa + be + adjetivo + to + verbo: qué tan fácil, difícil… es hacer algo con ella. El sujeto es en realidad el objeto del verbo, así que no añadas it/them al final.
This book is easy to read.
Este libro es fácil de leer. (no: easy to read it)
His handwriting is hard to read.
Su letra es difícil de leer.
3.¿For u of? ¿To + verbo o -ing?
| Quieres decir | Usa | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| quién lo hace / cómo es para alguien | for + persona | It's difficult for kids to sit still. |
| elogio o crítica del comportamiento de alguien | of + persona | It was nice of Lan to call. |
I'm glad to be home. |
| dar las gracias o pedir perdón por algo | thanks for / sorry for + -ing | Thanks for waiting. / Sorry for being late. |
Afraid: afraid to + verbo = tener demasiado miedo para hacer algo a propósito (I was afraid to ask); afraid of + -ing = tener miedo de que pase algo (I'm afraid of falling).
Sorry to hear that.); sorry for + -ing o sorry (that) + oración para algo que hiciste (Sorry for shouting.).
4.Relacionado: too, enough y the first / the only
- too + adjetivo + to + verbo = tanto que no se puede: It's too hot to sleep. Mira la lección “Too … to” / “enough to”.
- adjetivo + enough + to + verbo = lo suficiente: She's old enough to drive.
- the first / the last / the only (+ sustantivo) + to + verbo = el primero, el último o el único que hace algo: Lan was the first person to arrive. / He's the only one to pass the test.

El té está demasiado caliente para tomarlo.
