Lezione 76 · Tappa 6: Costruzioni verbali
Aggettivo + to-infinito
IntermedioAdjective + to-infinitive
Forma e uso
it's hard to…, I'm happy to…, nice to meet you — un aggettivo seguito da to
1.Forma
| Struttura | Esempio |
|---|---|
| It + be + aggettivo + to + verbo | It's hard to say. |
| It + be + aggettivo + for + persona + to + verbo | It's hard for me to understand him. |
| It + be + aggettivo + of + persona + to + verbo | It's kind of you to come. |
| persona + be + aggettivo + to + verbo | I'm happy to help. |
| cosa + be + aggettivo + to + verbo | This book is easy to read. |
Non dimenticare il soggetto vuoto it. In italiano diciamo “È difficile imparare l'inglese”, senza soggetto, ma le frasi inglesi hanno bisogno di un soggetto: It's difficult to learn English (non: Is difficult to learn English).
2.Come si usa
1. It's + aggettivo + to + verbo: dare un'opinione su un'azione: easy, hard, difficult, important, necessary, possible, safe, dangerous, nice, great, expensive…
It's important to drink enough water in hot weather.
Quando fa caldo è importante bere abbastanza acqua.
It isn't easy to find a cheap flat in Hanoi.
It was great to see you last weekend!
2. Dire chi fa l'azione: for + persona + to + verbo
It's hard for me to understand his accent.
It's normal for babies to wake up at night.
3. Giudicare il comportamento di qualcuno: It's + aggettivo + of + persona + to + verbo: kind, nice, good, generous, thoughtful, silly, careless, rude…
It's very kind of you to help me.
È molto gentile da parte tua aiutarmi.
It was silly of me to leave my phone in the taxi.
4. Persona + aggettivo di sentimento + to + verbo: come qualcuno reagisce a qualcosa: happy, glad, pleased, sorry, surprised, shocked, relieved, lucky, proud, disappointed…
Nice to meet you.
Piacere di conoscerti.
I'm sorry to hear that you're ill.
Mi dispiace sapere che stai male.
I was surprised to see Hung at the party.
We were lucky to get the last two tickets.
5. Persona + aggettivo di atteggiamento + to + verbo: pronto, disposto, attento…: ready, willing, happy (= disposto), keen, afraid, careful, quick, slow…
I'm ready to go.
Sono pronto ad andare.
I'm happy to help if you need anything.
Se ti serve qualcosa, ti aiuto volentieri.
Be careful not to drop it.
Attento a non farlo cadere. (negativa: not to + verbo)
6. Cosa + be + aggettivo + to + verbo: quanto è facile, difficile… fare qualcosa con quella cosa. Il soggetto è in realtà il complemento oggetto del verbo, quindi non aggiungere it/them alla fine.
This book is easy to read.
Questo libro è facile da leggere. (non: easy to read it)
His handwriting is hard to read.
La sua calligrafia è difficile da leggere.
3.For o of? To + verbo o -ing?
| Vuoi dire | Usa | Esempio |
|---|---|---|
| chi fa l'azione / com'è per qualcuno | for + persona | It's difficult for kids to sit still. |
| lodare o criticare il comportamento di qualcuno | of + persona | It was nice of Lan to call. |
I'm glad to be home. |
| ringraziare o scusarsi per qualcosa | thanks for / sorry for + -ing | Thanks for waiting. / Sorry for being late. |
Afraid: afraid to + verbo = avere troppa paura per fare qualcosa di proposito (I was afraid to ask); afraid of + -ing = avere paura che qualcosa possa succedere (I'm afraid of falling). I'm afraid (that)…
Sorry to hear that.); sorry for + -ing o sorry (that) + frase per qualcosa che hai fatto tu (Sorry for shouting.).
4.Strutture collegate: too, enough e the first / the only
- too + aggettivo + to + verbo = così tanto che non puoi: It's too hot to sleep. Vedi la lezione “‘Too … to’ / ‘enough to’”.
- aggettivo + enough + to + verbo = quanto basta: She's old enough to drive.
- the first / the last / the only (+ sostantivo) + to + verbo = il primo, l'ultimo o l'unico a fare qualcosa: Lan was the first person to arrive. / He's the only one to pass the test.
