Adjectif + to-infinitif

Intermédiaire

Adjective + to-infinitive

Forme et emploi

it's hard to…, I'm happy to…, nice to meet you — un adjectif suivi de to

1.Forme

StructureExemple
It + be + adjectif + to + verbeIt's hard to say.
It + be + adjectif + for + personne + to + verbeIt's hard for me to understand him.
It + be + adjectif + of + personne + to + verbeIt's kind of you to come.
personne + be + adjectif + to + verbeI'm happy to help.
chose + be + adjectif + to + verbeThis book is easy to read.

». Une phrase anglaise a besoin d'un sujet : It's difficult to learn English (pas : Is difficult to learn English).

2.Comment l'utiliser

1. It's + adjectif + to + verbe — donner son avis sur une action : easy, hard, difficult, important, necessary, possible, safe, dangerous, nice, great, expensive…

  • It's important to drink enough water in hot weather.

  • It isn't easy to find a cheap flat in Hanoi.

  • It was great to see you last weekend!

2. Préciser qui fait l'action : for + personne + to + verbe

  • It's hard for me to understand his accent.

  • It's normal for babies to wake up at night.

3. Juger le comportement de quelqu'un : It's + adjectif + of + personne + to + verbe — kind, nice, good, generous, thoughtful, silly, careless, rude…

  • It's very kind of you to help me.

    C'est très gentil à toi de m'aider.

  • It was silly of me to leave my phone in the taxi.

  • Nice to meet you.

    Enchanté de faire ta connaissance.

  • I'm sorry to hear that you're ill.

  • I was surprised to see Hung at the party.

  • We were lucky to get the last two tickets.

5. Personne + adjectif d'attitude + to + verbe — prêt, réticent, prudent… : ready, willing, happy (= prêt à, volontiers), keen, afraid, careful, quick, slow…

  • I'm ready to go.

    Je suis prêt à partir.

  • I'm happy to help if you need anything.

  • Be careful not to drop it.

(négation : not to + verbe)

6. Chose + be + adjectif + to + verbe — à quel point il est facile, difficile… de faire quelque chose avec elle. Le sujet est en fait le complément du verbe, donc n'ajoute pas it/them à la fin.

  • This book is easy to read.

Ce livre est facile à lire. (pas : easy to read it)

  • His handwriting is hard to read.

Son écriture est difficile à lire.

3.For ou of ? To + verbe ou -ing ?

Tu veux direUtiliseExemple
qui fait l'action / comment c'est pour quelqu'unfor + personneIt's difficult for kids to sit still.
un éloge ou une critique du comportement de quelqu'unof + personneIt was nice of Lan to call.
ce que tu ressens face à ce que tu fais ou voisadjectif + to + verbeI'm glad to be home.
remercier ou s'excuser pour quelque chosethanks for / sorry for + -ingThanks for waiting. / Sorry for being late.

Afraid : afraid to + verbe = avoir trop peur pour faire quelque chose volontairement (I was afraid to ask) ; afraid of + -ing = avoir peur que quelque chose arrive (I'm afraid of falling).

Sorry to hear that.) ; sorry for + -ing ou sorry (that) + proposition pour quelque chose qu'on a fait (Sorry for shouting.).

4.Dans la même famille : too, enough et the first / the only

  • too + adjectif + to + verbe = tellement que ce n'est pas possible : It's too hot to sleep. Voir la leçon « Too … to » / « enough to ».
  • adjectif + enough + to + verbe = autant que nécessaire : She's old enough to drive.
  • the first / the last / the only (+ nom) + to + verbe = le premier, le dernier ou le seul à faire quelque chose : Lan was the first person to arrive. / He's the only one to pass the test.
