Leçon 75 · Étape 6: Constructions verbales
« Be used to » + -ing
Intermédiaire“Be used to” + -ing
Forme et emploi
be/get used to + -ing ou nom — être habitué à quelque chose
1.Sens et forme
Be used to + nom / pronom / -ing signifie qu'on est habitué à quelque chose : ce n'est plus nouveau ni étrange pour soi. Get used to signifie s'habituer — le passage de l'inhabituel au normal.
| Forme | Exemple | |
|---|---|---|
| Habitué | be used to + nom / -ing | I'm used to the noise. / She's used to working late. |
| Pas habitué | be not used to + nom / -ing | I'm not used to spicy food. |
| S'habituer | get used to + nom / -ing | You'll get used to it. / I'm getting used to driving on the right. |
| Question | Are you used to…? / Have you got used to…? | Are you used to the heat yet? |
Ici, to est une préposition, pas le to de l'infinitif. Il est donc toujours suivi d'un nom ou de -ing : I'm used to getting up early (pas : used to get up).
2.Be used to — déjà habitué
Be se conjugue normalement : am/is/are used to (maintenant), was/were used to (à ce moment-là), will be used to (plus tard).
I've lived in Hanoi for years, so I'm used to the traffic.
My brother is a chef, so he's used to standing all day.
When I first came to Saigon, I wasn't used to the heat.

(passif : being + participe passé)
3.Get used to — s'habituer
Get used to s'emploie à tous les temps et s'accompagne souvent de soon, slowly, still, it took me a while… pour montrer combien de temps prend le changement. Au present perfect, l'anglais britannique dit have got used to, l'anglais américain plutôt have gotten used to. Become used to est aussi correct, mais plus soutenu.
Don't worry — you'll soon get used to the food here.

4.Comparaison avec « used to » + verbe
Voir aussi la leçon « Used to ».
| Forme | Sens | Exemple |
|---|---|---|
| used to + verbe | une habitude ou une situation passée qui n'existe plus | I used to live alone. |
| be used to + nom / -ing | être habitué (maintenant, ou au moment dont on parle) | I'm used to living alone. |
| get used to + nom / -ing | s'habituer | I'm getting used to living alone. |
I used to drink coffee with sugar, but now I don't.
I'm used to drinking coffee without sugar now.
On oublie souvent be et on dit « I used to the noise » — c'est faux. Habitué maintenant = I'm used to the noise. Seule une habitude passée (« je faisais ça avant ») se dit I used to + verbe.
Attention à un quatrième sens : be used to + base verbale peut aussi être le passif du verbe use (être utilisé pour) : Wood is used to make paper. Ici, used se prononce /juːzd/ ; dans used to (habitude passée) et be used to (habitué), il se prononce /juːst/.
5.Erreurs fréquentes
I'm used to work late at night.I'm used to working late at night.
Be used to + -ing, pas la base verbale.
He isn't use to the heat yet.He isn't used to the heat yet.
C'est toujours used, avec un -d.

Pour le présent, il faut be : I'm used to.
I'm using to the traffic now.I'm used to the traffic now.
Cette structure n'utilise jamais using.
It took me a while to get used with the new software. It took me a while to get used to the new software.
La préposition est toujours to.
She's getting used to live alone. She's getting used to living alone.
Get used to est aussi suivi de -ing.
