Lección 75 · Etapa 6: Patrones verbales
“Be used to” + -ing
IntermedioForma y uso
be/get used to + -ing o sustantivo — estar acostumbrado a algo
1.Significado y forma
Be used to + sustantivo / pronombre / -ing significa que estás acostumbrado a algo: ya no te resulta nuevo ni raro. Get used to significa acostumbrarse: el cambio de raro a normal.
| Forma | Ejemplo | |
|---|---|---|
| Acostumbrado | be used to + sustantivo / -ing | I'm used to the noise. / She's used to working late. |
| No acostumbrado | be not used to + sustantivo / -ing | I'm not used to spicy food. |
| Acostumbrarse | get used to + sustantivo / -ing | You'll get used to it. / I'm getting used to driving on the right. |
| Pregunta | Are you used to…? / Have you got used to…? | Are you used to the heat yet? |
Aquí to es una preposición, no el to del infinitivo. Por eso siempre va seguido de un sustantivo o de -ing: I'm used to getting up early (no: used to get up).
2.Be used to: ya acostumbrado
Be cambia de tiempo como siempre: am/is/are used to (ahora), was/were used to (en ese momento), will be used to (más adelante).
I've lived in Hanoi for years, so I'm used to the traffic.
My brother is a chef, so he's used to standing all day.
When I first came to Saigon, I wasn't used to the heat.
Are you used to working from home yet?
¿Ya te acostumbraste a trabajar desde casa?
Teachers are used to being asked the same question again and again.
(pasiva: being + participio)
3.Get used to: acostumbrarse
Get used to funciona en todos los tiempos y a menudo va con soon, slowly, still, it took me a while… para indicar cuánto tarda el cambio. En present perfect, el inglés británico dice have got used to y el americano normalmente have gotten used to. Become used to también es correcto, pero más formal.
Don't worry — you'll soon get used to the food here.
No te preocupes, pronto te acostumbrarás a la comida de aquí.
I'm slowly getting used to my new keyboard.
Poco a poco me estoy acostumbrando a mi teclado nuevo.
It took me a month to get used to working nights.
Have you got used to your new glasses yet?
¿Ya te acostumbraste a tus gafas nuevas?
My uncle lived in Germany for ten years, but he never got used to the dark winters.
4.Comparado con “used to” + verbo
Fíjate si delante hay be/get, y si después viene la forma base o -ing. Mira también la lección “Used to”.
| Forma | Significado | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| used to + verbo | un hábito o estado pasado que ya terminó | I used to live alone. |
| be used to + sustantivo / -ing | estar acostumbrado (ahora, o en el momento del que hablas) | I'm used to living alone. |
| get used to + sustantivo / -ing | acostumbrarse | I'm getting used to living alone. |
I used to drink coffee with sugar, but now I don't.
I'm used to drinking coffee without sugar now.
(acostumbrado ahora)
Muchos estudiantes se saltan el be y dicen “I used to the noise”, y eso está mal. Acostumbrado ahora = I'm used to the noise. Solo un hábito pasado (“antes lo hacía”) es I used to + verbo.
Ojo con un cuarto significado: be used to + forma base también puede ser la pasiva del verbo use (usarse para algo): Wood is used to make paper. Aquí used se pronuncia /juːzd/; en used to (hábito pasado) y be used to (acostumbrado) se pronuncia /juːst/.
5.Errores comunes
I'm used to work late at night.I'm used to working late at night.
Be used to + -ing, no la forma base.
He isn't use to the heat yet.He isn't used to the heat yet.
Siempre es used, con -d.
I've lived in Sydney for two years, so I used to driving on the left.…so I'm used to driving on the left.
Para el presente necesitas be: I'm used to.
I'm using to the traffic now.I'm used to the traffic now.
Esta estructura nunca usa using.
It took me a while to get used with the new software. It took me a while to get used to the new software.
La preposición siempre es to.
She's getting used to live alone. She's getting used to living alone.
Get used to también va con -ing.
