“Be used to” + -ing
IntermedioForma e uso
be/get used to + -ing o nome — essere abituati a qualcosa
1.Significato e forma
Be used to + sostantivo / pronome / -ing significa essere abituato a qualcosa: per te non è più nuovo né strano. Get used to significa abituarsi: il passaggio da strano a normale.
| Forma | Esempio | |
|---|---|---|
| Abituato | be used to + noun / -ing | I'm used to the noise. / She's used to working late. |
| Non abituato | be not used to + noun / -ing | I'm not used to spicy food. |
| Abituarsi | get used to + noun / -ing | You'll get used to it. / I'm getting used to driving on the right. |
| Domanda | Are you used to…? / Have you got used to…? | Are you used to the heat yet? |
Qui to è una preposizione, non il to dell'infinito. Per questo è sempre seguito da un sostantivo o da -ing: I'm used to getting up early (non: used to get up).
2.Be used to: già abituato
Be cambia tempo come al solito: am/is/are used to (adesso), was/were used to (in quel momento), will be used to (in futuro).
I've lived in Hanoi for years, so I'm used to the traffic.

3.Get used to: abituarsi
Get used to si usa in tutti i tempi e va spesso con soon, slowly, still, it took me a while… per indicare quanto tempo richiede il cambiamento. Al present perfect l'inglese britannico dice have got used to, quello americano di solito have gotten used to. Anche become used to è corretto, ma più formale.
Don't worry — you'll soon get used to the food here.

4.A confronto con “used to” + verbo
Vedi anche la lezione “Used to”.
| Forma | Significato | Esempio |
|---|---|---|
| used to + verb | un'abitudine o uno stato del passato che non c'è più | I used to live alone. |
| be used to + noun / -ing | esserci abituati (adesso, o nel momento di cui parli) | I'm used to living alone. |
| get used to + noun / -ing | abituarsi | I'm getting used to living alone. |
I used to drink coffee with sugar, but now I don't.
I'm used to drinking coffee without sugar now.
(abituato adesso)
Spesso chi studia dimentica be e dice “I used to the noise”: è sbagliato. Abituato adesso = I'm used to the noise. Solo un'abitudine passata (“lo facevo prima”) si esprime con I used to + verbo.
Attenzione a un quarto significato: be used to + forma base può essere anche il passivo del verbo use (usato per uno scopo): Wood is used to make paper. Qui used si pronuncia /juːzd/; in used to (abitudine passata) e be used to (abituato) si pronuncia /juːst/.
5.Errori comuni
I'm used to work late at night.I'm used to working late at night.
Be used to + -ing, non la forma base.
He isn't use to the heat yet.He isn't used to the heat yet.
È sempre used, con la -d.

Per parlare di adesso serve be: I'm used to.
I'm using to the traffic now.I'm used to the traffic now.
Questa struttura non usa mai using.
It took me a while to get used with the new software. It took me a while to get used to the new software.
La preposizione è sempre to.
She's getting used to live alone. She's getting used to living alone.
Anche get used to vuole -ing.
