Leçon 74 · Étape 6: Constructions verbales
Préposition + -ing
IntermédiairePreposition + -ing
Forme et emploi
by / without / before / after + -ing — après une préposition, le verbe prend -ing
1.La règle
Les prépositions (in, on, at, of, for, about, with, without, by, before, after, instead of…) sont suivies de noms.
|---|---|---|
| by | by taking the bus | la manière de faire quelque chose |
| without | without saying goodbye | quelque chose ne s'est pas produit |
| before / after | before leaving, after finishing work | l'ordre de deux actions |
| instead of | instead of driving | une action en remplace une autre |
| despite / in spite of | despite feeling tired | opposition |
| for | thanks for coming, sorry for being late | la raison d'un remerciement ou d'une excuse |
| how about / what about | how about going out?
Dès que tu vois before, after, by, without, instead of, for, about… suivi d'un verbe, vérifie le -ing.
2.Comment l'utiliser
You can save a lot of money by cooking at home.
She improved her English by watching films with English subtitles.
He left the party without saying goodbye.
Don't go out without locking the door.
3. Before / after + -ing — une action avant ou après une autre
Wash your hands before eating.
Lave-toi les mains avant de manger.
After finishing university, Minh moved to Da Nang.
Après avoir terminé l'université, Minh a déménagé à Da Nang.
Before leaving, please turn off the lights.
(pas : Before to leave)
Instead of taking a taxi, we walked home.
Why don't you call her instead of sending a message?
5. Thanks for / sorry for + -ing — remercier ou s'excuser pour quelque chose qu'on a fait
Thanks for helping me with the move.
Sorry for not replying sooner — I was busy with exams.
(négation : not + -ing)
6. How about / what about + -ing — faire une suggestion
How about having a picnic this weekend?
| Type | Exemples |
|---|---|
| adjectif + préposition | good at drawing, interested in learning, afraid of flying, tired of waiting, keen on cooking, proud of winning |
| verbe + préposition | think about moving, succeed in finding, insist on paying, apologise for being late, dream of becoming |
| nom + préposition | a chance of winning, the idea of living abroad, a reason for leaving, a tool for cutting |
My dad is really good at cooking Vietnamese food.
Phong is thinking about moving to Da Nang.
Phong pense à déménager à Da Nang.
Did they succeed in finding a flat?
(pas : succeed to find)
I love the idea of living in the countryside.
I'm tired of people telling me what to do. We're worried about him driving at night.
4.Quand « to » est une préposition
En général, to est suivi de la base verbale (want to go). Mais dans certaines expressions, to est une préposition, donc il est suivi d'un nom ou de -ing : look forward to, be/get used to, object to, prefer … to …, when it comes to, in addition to.
We're really looking forward to seeing you.
Nous avons vraiment hâte de vous voir. (pas : to see)
I prefer walking to driving in the city.
When it comes to cooking, my brother is the expert.
Si la phrase fonctionne toujours (I'm looking forward to the holiday), « to » est une préposition → utilise -ing. Sinon (I want to the holiday — faux), utilise la base verbale. Voir aussi la leçon « Be used to » + -ing.
5.Négation, passif et sujet
- Négation : mets not devant la forme en -ing — Sorry for not calling. / She got sick by not eating properly.
- Passif : being + participe passé — He got into the building without being seen. / I hate the idea of being watched.
He was proud of winning / of having won the prize.
- Le sujet sous-entendu de la forme en -ing est le sujet de la proposition principale : After finishing lunch, we went back to work (c'est nous qui avons fini de déjeuner). Évite After finishing lunch, the meeting started — on dirait que c'est la réunion qui a déjeuné.
- Before / after sont aussi des conjonctions, donc une proposition complète fonctionne aussi : Before I left, I called my mum. = Before leaving, I called my mum.
