Preposition + -ing
by / without / before / after + -ing — 전치사 뒤의 동사는 -ing
1.규칙
전치사(in, on, at, of, for, about, with, without, by, before, after, instead of…)
|---|---|---|
| by | by taking the bus | 어떻게 하는지(방법) |
| without | without saying goodbye | 어떤 일이 일어나지 않음 |
| before / after | before leaving, after finishing work | 두 동작의 순서 |
| instead of | instead of driving | 한 동작이 다른 동작을 대신함 |
| despite / in spite of | despite feeling tired | 대조(~에도 불구하고) |
| for | thanks for coming, sorry for being late | 고마워하거나 사과하는 이유 |
| how about / what about | how about going out?
영어에서는 전치사 바로 뒤의 동사가 반드시 -ing로 끝나야 합니다. before, after, by, without, instead of, for, about…

Don't go out without locking the door.
3. Before / after + -ing —

Before leaving, please turn off the lights.
(Before to leave가 아님)
4. Instead of + -ing —
Instead of taking a taxi, we walked home.
Why don't you call her instead of sending a message?
5. Thanks for / sorry for + -ing —

6. How about / what about + -ing —

|---|---|
| 형용사 + 전치사 | good at drawing, interested in learning, afraid of flying, tired of waiting, keen on cooking, proud of winning |
| 동사 + 전치사 | think about moving, succeed in finding, insist on paying, apologise for being late, dream of becoming |
| 명사 + 전치사 | a chance of winning, the idea of living abroad, a reason for leaving, a tool for cutting |

I'm tired of people telling me what to do. We're worried about him driving at night.
4.“to”가 전치사일 때
보통 to는 동사원형과 함께 씁니다(want to go). 하지만 어떤 표현에서는 to가 전치사라서 뒤에 명사나 -ing가 옵니다: look forward to, be/get used to, object to, prefer … to …, when it comes to, in addition to.
We're really looking forward to seeing you.
(to see가 아님)
I prefer walking to driving in the city.

(I'm looking forward to the holiday) 그 “to”는 전치사 → -ing를 씁니다. (I want to the holiday — 틀림) 동사원형을 씁니다. 「“be used to” + -ing」 레슨도 참고하세요.
- 부정: -ing 앞에 not을 둡니다 — Sorry for not calling. / She got sick by not eating properly.
- 수동태: being + 과거분사 — He got into the building without being seen. / I hate the idea of being watched.
He was proud of winning / of having won the prize.
After finishing lunch, we went back to work(점심을 다 먹은 것은 we). After finishing lunch, the meeting started는 피하세요 — 회의가 점심을 먹은 것처럼 들립니다.
Before I left, I called my mum. = Before leaving, I called my mum.
