Lição 74 · Etapa 6: Padrões verbais
Preposição + -ing
IntermédioPreposition + -ing
Forma e uso
by / without / before / after + -ing — depois de preposição, o verbo leva -ing
1.A regra
Preposições (in, on, at, of, for, about, with, without, by, before, after, instead of…) são seguidas de substantivos.
|---|---|---|
| by | by taking the bus | como você faz algo |
| without | without saying goodbye | algo não aconteceu |
| before / after | before leaving, after finishing work | ordem de duas ações |
| instead of | instead of driving | uma ação substitui outra |
| despite / in spite of | despite feeling tired | contraste |
| for | thanks for coming, sorry for being late | o motivo pelo qual você agradece ou pede desculpas |
| how about / what about | how about going out?
Sempre que vir before, after, by, without, instead of, for, about… seguidos de um verbo, confira o -ing.
2.Como se usa
You can save a lot of money by cooking at home.
She improved her English by watching films with English subtitles.
He left the party without saying goodbye.
Ele saiu da festa sem se despedir.
Don't go out without locking the door.
Não saia sem trancar a porta.
3. Before / after + -ing — uma ação antes ou depois de outra
Wash your hands before eating.
Lave as mãos antes de comer.
After finishing university, Minh moved to Da Nang.
Before leaving, please turn off the lights.
Antes de sair, por favor, apague as luzes. (não: Before to leave)
4. Instead of + -ing — fazer uma coisa no lugar de outra
Instead of taking a taxi, we walked home.
Why don't you call her instead of sending a message?
5. Thanks for / sorry for + -ing — agradecer ou pedir desculpas por algo que você fez
Thanks for helping me with the move.
Obrigado por me ajudar com a mudança.
Sorry for not replying sooner — I was busy with exams.
(negativa: not + -ing)
6. How about / what about + -ing — fazer uma sugestão
How about having a picnic this weekend?
| Tipo | Exemplos |
|---|---|
| adjetivo + preposição | good at drawing, interested in learning, afraid of flying, tired of waiting, keen on cooking, proud of winning |
| verbo + preposição | think about moving, succeed in finding, insist on paying, apologise for being late, dream of becoming |
| substantivo + preposição | a chance of winning, the idea of living abroad, a reason for leaving, a tool for cutting |
My dad is really good at cooking Vietnamese food.
Phong is thinking about moving to Da Nang.
Did they succeed in finding a flat?
Eles conseguiram encontrar um apartamento? (não: succeed to find)
I love the idea of living in the countryside.
I'm tired of people telling me what to do. We're worried about him driving at night.
4.Quando o “to” é uma preposição
Normalmente o to vem com a forma base (want to go). Mas em algumas expressões o to é uma preposição, então é seguido de um substantivo ou de -ing: look forward to, be/get used to, object to, prefer … to …, when it comes to, in addition to.
We're really looking forward to seeing you.
Estamos muito ansiosos para ver você. (não: to see)
I prefer walking to driving in the city.
Na cidade, prefiro andar a pé a dirigir.
When it comes to cooking, my brother is the expert.
Quando o assunto é cozinhar, o especialista é meu irmão.
Teste: coloque um substantivo depois do “to”. Se a frase continuar funcionando (I'm looking forward to the holiday), o “to” é preposição → use -ing. Se não funcionar (I want to the holiday — errado), use a forma base. Veja também a lição “‘Be used to’ + -ing”.
5.Negativa, voz passiva e sujeito
- Negativa: coloque not antes do -ing — Sorry for not calling. / She got sick by not eating properly.
- Voz passiva: being + particípio passado — He got into the building without being seen. / I hate the idea of being watched.
He was proud of winning / of having won the prize.
- O sujeito oculto do -ing é o sujeito da oração principal: After finishing lunch, we went back to work (nós terminamos o almoço). Evite After finishing lunch, the meeting started — parece que foi a reunião que almoçou.
- Before / after também são conjunções, então uma oração completa também funciona: Before I left, I called my mum. = Before leaving, I called my mum.
