Preposition + -ing
by / without / before / after + -ing — 前置詞の後の動詞は -ing
1.ルール
前置詞(in, on, at, of, for, about, with, without, by, before, after, instead of…)
|---|---|---|
| by | by taking the bus | どうやってするか(手段) |
| without | without saying goodbye | 何かが起きなかった |
| before / after | before leaving, after finishing work | 2つの動作の順序 |
| despite / in spite of | despite feeling tired | 対比(〜にもかかわらず) |
| for | thanks for coming, sorry for being late | 感謝や謝罪の理由 |
| how about / what about | how about going out?
before, after, by, without, instead of, for, about…
You can save a lot of money by cooking at home.
She improved her English by watching films with English subtitles.
2. Without + -ing —
He left the party without saying goodbye.
Don't go out without locking the door.
3. Before / after + -ing —
Wash your hands before eating.
After finishing university, Minh moved to Da Nang.
Before leaving, please turn off the lights.
(Before to leave ではない)
4. Instead of + -ing —
Instead of taking a taxi, we walked home.
Why don't you call her instead of sending a message?
5. Thanks for / sorry for + -ing —
Thanks for helping me with the move.
Sorry for not replying sooner — I was busy with exams.
(否定:not + -ing)
6. How about / what about + -ing — 提案する
How about having a picnic this weekend?
|---|---|
| 形容詞 + 前置詞 | good at drawing, interested in learning, afraid of flying, tired of waiting, keen on cooking, proud of winning |
| 動詞 + 前置詞 | think about moving, succeed in finding, insist on paying, apologise for being late, dream of becoming |
| 名詞 + 前置詞 | a chance of winning, the idea of living abroad, a reason for leaving, a tool for cutting |
My dad is really good at cooking Vietnamese food.
Phong is thinking about moving to Da Nang.
Did they succeed in finding a flat?
I love the idea of living in the countryside.
I'm tired of people telling me what to do. We're worried about him driving at night.
ふつう to は動詞の原形といっしょに使います(want to go)。しかし一部の表現では to が前置詞なので、あとには名詞か -ing が来ます:look forward to, be/get used to, object to, prefer … to …, when it comes to, in addition to。
We're really looking forward to seeing you.
(to see ではない)
I prefer walking to driving in the city.
When it comes to cooking, my brother is the expert.
(I'm looking forward to the holiday)、その「to」は前置詞 → -ing を使います。 (I want to the holiday — まちがい)、原形を使います。レッスン『「be used to」+ -ing』も見てください。
- 否定:-ing の前に not を置きます — Sorry for not calling. / She got sick by not eating properly.
- 受動態:being + 過去分詞 — He got into the building without being seen. / I hate the idea of being watched.
He was proud of winning / of having won the prize.
After finishing lunch, we went back to work(昼食を終えたのは we)。After finishing lunch, the meeting started
Before I left, I called my mum. = Before leaving, I called my mum.
I'm interested in learn Korean.I'm interested in learning Korean.
Before to leave, please turn off the lights. Before leaving, please turn off the lights.
Thanks for help me.Thanks for helping me.
He's thinking about to buy a car. He's thinking about buying a car.
She's good in drawing. She's good at drawing.
He left without say anything. He left without saying anything.
without + -ing です。
