Forma y uso
a few / a little, much / many, a lot of, plenty of, none of — decir cuánto o cuántos
1.¿Contable o incontable?
Solo a lot of, lots of, plenty of sirven para los dos.
| Significado | + sustantivo en plural | + sustantivo incontable |
|---|---|---|
| Una gran cantidad | many friends · a lot of / lots of friends | much time · a lot of / lots of time |
| Más que suficiente | plenty of chairs | plenty of time |
| Una cantidad pequeña (suficiente) | a few eggs | a little milk |
| Muy poco, casi nada | few people | little traffic |
| Preguntar la cantidad | How many students…? | How much sugar…? |
2.Much, many y a lot of
Many + sustantivo en plural, much + sustantivo incontable.
How many cousins have you got?
¿Cuántos primos tienes?
We don't have much time, so let's take a taxi.
How much is this bag?
¿Cuánto cuesta esta bolsa? (para preguntar el precio: How much…?)
Are there many tourists in Sa Pa in winter?
“I have much time” suena muy raro. Many es posible en afirmativa (Many people think…), pero suena un poco formal. Excepción: too much, so much, too many, so many son totalmente normales en afirmativa.
Lan has a lot of friends at university.
Lan tiene muchos amigos en la universidad.
I drink lots of water when it's hot.
Bebo mucha agua cuando hace calor.
You put too much salt in the soup.
Le pusiste demasiada sal a la sopa.
There were so many people at the night market!
¡Había muchísima gente en el mercado nocturno!
- a lot of + sustantivo; si no hay sustantivo después, se quita of: I eat a lot of fruit. / I eat a lot.
- En las respuestas cortas también se quita el sustantivo: How many eggs do we need? — Not many. / Just a few.
- Much solo después de un verbo (sin very / so / too) se usa sobre todo en negativas y preguntas: I don't sleep much. En afirmativa, di: I sleep a lot.
3.A few / a little o few / little
| Positivo: algo | Negativo: casi nada | |
|---|---|---|
| Sustantivo en plural | I have a few friends here. | I have few friends here. |
| Sustantivo incontable | There's a little rice left. | There's little rice left. |
I bought a few mangoes at the market.

Few / little solos suenan un poco formales. En la vida diaria se dice más a menudo not many / not much u only a few / only a little: Not many people came. / I only have a little time.
4.Plenty of y none of
Don't rush. We've got plenty of time.
Tranquilo, tenemos tiempo de sobra.
There are plenty of cheap restaurants near the station.
Después de none of va the / my / these… + sustantivo, o un pronombre: us / you / them / it.

Ninguno de mis amigos sabe cocinar.
I tried three shops, but none of them had my size.

¿Cuántas entradas quedan? — Ninguna. (none solo, sin sustantivo)
- Si el sustantivo no lleva the / my… delante, usa no, no none of: I have no friends here (no: none of friends). Mira la lección “No / none / any, nothing / nobody”.
